    Dusk

    Hi,
Just wondering what you think of this photo, and, more importantly, what I can do to improve these sorts of shots in the future.
My camera is a Canon G9, so no fancy expensive DSLR, but I love my G9 anyway.

    Thanks everyone,
    Kathryn

Nice colors. The only thing I can find in focus is the water, though. Don't know what settings you have control over with the g9 but this needs a smaller aperture with focus at or near infinity. Probably this would cause a shutter speed too slow to shoot handheld and a tripod would be necessary.

    Re: Dusk

Wow. These colors are blinding! Nice but sort of loud too (but in a good way).

I agree that the lack of focus limits the photo's potential. I see it and immediately like it, but .. the more I view it the more cheated I feel of details. It's just hard to make anything out. I would also consider cropping out the right side red light and reflection and go with the single red reflection in the center.

Gotta use a tripod. I know they're a pain to carry, but get a little mini one that fits in your pocket. Then you can set it up on a ledge.

    Oh my, lovely colors.

This has a composition problem in that the image is split exactly in half by the horizon/cloud line. It would be much better if you chose one element (the sky or the water) as the focal point and gave at least 2/3 of the frame to that element.

Check out Dr Roebucks Malibu shot for and example of strong horizon placement.
    No, I DON'T need that.

My cam is a powershot sx100 No need for a DSLR as long as you have full manual and a good eye. The scene, for me, seems a bit busy, I'd like to see the same shot with more sky, and perhaps the pillars to not be in the image from there onwards up

I agree with MB1. Crop out some of the sky. Other than that. Nice work.

A crop on the sky, too, would look good

I agree with the comments made by Kajuh. Seems that a tripod was not used here. These night dusk shots need absolute steadyness.
But I feel it is a good effort.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
