    Ducklings on a Log

While at the zoo the other day, I happened upon this scene on the pond in the middle of the park and tried to capture it the best way i could. Handheld at about 250mm as they would not allow the use of tripods in the park. Is this more than just a snapshot at the zoo? Need a crop? Comments appreciated

I like this shot and personally i wouldnt crop it. I like how you kept mum in the picture and a crop would split things up

That's a really nice shot, I like it. Mommy in the background makes the image even more complete. Well done.

Thanks for the comments.I like this shot as it is as well and did'nt want to crop it as I like having the mom duck in the bg. I did desaturate the background slightly so that it would not look too busy and detract from the subjects.

I don't understand why not more members commented on this very good shot

You gotta love those duckies sitting there so comfortable with mother duck keeping an eye on them. Look at their 'bellies'... light...dark..light...dark... light...dark...

Great subject and technically 100% ok.

    Well done Gary, top quality!

Yep. More than a snapshot. You can't tell that it was shot at a zoo. Good job.

I will know that I am getting good at photography when, like David_M, I am able to look at a picture (or scene), and immediatly analyse and identify shades, lights and textures. David_M how quickly you noticed the light dark light duckies is impressive. I learn something new in this forum every day.
Opinions I got lots, expertise none!! Hmm… except for giving opinions!!

Definitely not a typical zoo snapshot. The inky colors on the water, combined with the "ducks in a row" is really compelling. I also like the faded parent duck in the background; adds an interesting balancing point. I wouldn't change anything Gary. Nice shot.

This is a cute shot Gary, it looks like you set this up it's so perfect. It was pointed out that the ducklings are lined up white, gray, white, gray...
I do like the mother duck in the background as well. I kind of wish there was more color in this photo, however there isn't much you can do about that. This is a great shot, you've done a good job.

    Love your image

The others have said about everything about this image except what I like the best and to me sets the photo apart, that is the rich colors and texture of the log and the green moss that forms your lower boarder. Great family portrait.

And only comment i wish to add is well done for spotting the opportunity.Reminds me of a time when i was out with my old camera club climbing some hills heading for an old building when one of our group stopped and took a pic.We all wondered why till we saw the result. In the club our leader remembered our comments at the time and killed us all by simply saying"He was looking while ye were chatting". Learned a lesson that day !!
