    Down at the Marina ..

Another attempt to capture a tranquil boat scene that one often sees, but has so difficult a time photographing. C&Cs welcome.

note - you may feel this one's underexposed and/or was an overuse of a polarizing filter. Actually, it is Ektachrome VS 120 film shot w/o a filter (using a Mamiya 645 film camera). I tried adjusting it's density a bit but decided to be careful not to eliminate the deep blues and blow out the sky, which was starting to happen with more adjustment.

My opinion is you need far fewer boats to capture tranqulity.
I bet it seemed tranquil while you were there but it just seems busy to me.
Focus and color and all is fine.

    Greg,
I think I would have preferred without the foreground plants, just to critique something, it is a nice shot

I agree with Frog about less boats .
Maybe less ripples in the water would calm it down a little (less motion)

Re: Down at the Marina ..

Tranquil, no, not a bad shot though, I would think more of a busy dock scene than tranquil. Tranquil would be a small cove with a white sandy beach and one sailboat moored about 200 feet from the shore. Maybe a couple of brightly colored umbrellas on the shore with a cabana or two.

I think the light's wrong, the photo would have been much better if shot at dawn or dusk. I've also noticed a distinct magenta/cyan color cast in most of the photos you've posted shooting Ektachrome. When I color correct using the eyedropper in LR the color changes more toward blue green, and to my eye looks tons more natural.

I highly recommend trying Fujichrome Velvia, It produces wonderfully strong skies and in general tends toward over saturated, making for dramatic photos.

Re: Down at the Marina ..

    Thanks fellows.

Frog, Troy, I agree the number of boats may be too much for a calm setting. I guess it's more of a busy waterfront marina scene than a tranquil one.

Armando, funny you mention that, I also tried it with the foreground cropped out, which looks OK I think. I ended up leaving it in to create a third plane, but that also adds another element and potentially clutters it up a bit.

EOS, always hard shooting mid day, esp for a naturally contrasty film like Ektachrome (or Velvia). Sometimes though, you're there and can wait for sunset, so have to just take what you can. I was happy there were clouds to spice it up (you don't see these type clouds in SD very often). Personally, I do see something off with the color .. But do you think it's magenta/cyan? I don't see it. Ektachrome usually leans heavily towards the blues, Velvia greens and warmer colors. Velvia is mega saturated, though Ekta VS is a close second. I guess they all have their own personalities. I also shoot Velvia at times. I will try adjusting the color .. just not sure which direction, but will try. Btw, that tranquil scene you describe sounds like a nice painting.
