Does the damage add to the beauty?

Oh this gave me a little stab of sorrow for the poor thing and to me if a photo gives you an emotional jolt - it's successful. I think the damage plays up the vulnerability and fragility of these creatures and reminds us of what a harsh mistress Mother Nature is. Does it fly in circles now??

Technically I think your background is good, the shot of color in the flower is a nice counterpoint. I wish the head of the bf was sharper (but that could be my monitor). The lighting is a bit harsh though and the bug itself isn't highlighted in anyway.

Overall a nice, poigiant capture.

He/she actually flies pretty normally and didn't see bothered.

My first thought is, that poor butterfly.
It is very colorful LL.
I like the contrast in colors. The orange on the green.
It seems to be a little out of focus?

...but I certainly think it makes the shot more interesting, and yes, in a certain way, more disturbing...

I think most of us agree that natural beauty is unlike any other, and the torn wing violently disrupts what in our mind is usually perceived as the wonderfully perfect pattern of the butterfly.

What you have is called tension, a disruption in an otherwise harmonic composition.

BTW, this would make a perfect topic for discussion in the Art Forum... ;)

You seem to have a knack for finding damaged animals.. wait, didn't you have the squirrel with a chunk missing? I may be mistaken...

I agree with the others, it is poignant....
I guess the moral of the story could be that although damaged, beauty was still found.
