kit, I love the muted colors, and the shape of the flower, doesn't hurt that I love PURPLE either.. Compositionally, Its good, if i turn my monitor on its side...lol ( IOW...I think it would be stronger if it were a vertical shot) I'm guessing that you mean it to be this way though but just wanted to tell you my true thoughts....ha ha.

    Later...
On second thought, I'm not used to seeing this kind of flower, so i guess if it flowers out to the side, then people who do know it, would have to turn their monitors as well....

Very interesting. I like the colors, and the DOF is great. I might try to crop it a bit on the right, but other than that, great shot!!

Yes. Very nice! My only suggestion is to give the petal on the bottom left a tad more breathing room. The flower looks back lit but the buds above look appear to be lit from above and to the left. Maybe it's just my bloodshot eyes. (It's 3 am here and I should be working)

Oh, yeah. I would like just a bit more empty space around the flower on the left and especially below. Just beautiful.

Rachel, Thanks for checking it out. I doubt if anyone would actually know this flower, it's just a simple ground orchid. It did bloom out to the side of the actual plant. The only thing that was upside down was me while taking it. Really embarrassing pose on my part. Some lucky photog could have snapped a good shot.lol

Thank you Fadder. I know what you mean, it does seem a bit stretched out to the left, that's why I cropped it so tight on the left, which I didn't get away with according to a few who think it's too tight. I'm getting ready to post the original here, which has too much room on left I think, but it's really hard to tell. That's why this critique is crucial to us all. It's so hard to be objective after seeing it and working with it! It's great to hear the opinion of someone just seeing it for the first time.
    Thanks for helping,
    Kit

lol Bill...I'm posting the original that has plenty of breathing room on the left but none on the bottom. You are very observant to notice the lighting. It was completely overcast and I was actually shooting from under the flower...don't ask how. You don't want to know! You should be working at 3am? well then, this flower is for you!

That just makes me feel so good. I'm all smiley. Thank you, Gary! As for PS... not much on this one. Just the usual levels, curves, tweaking the color and miniscule sharpening.

Chunk, your wish is my command! Here's the original, which you see has plenty room on left, would you mind cropping it where you think it would look good? No more room down bottom unfortunately but maybe if it can breathe more on the left, it won't be too obvious. Your reaction cracks me up and makes me happy at the same time. oh yeah!

I like it like that, Kit, I wouldn't crop it from there. Here's the crop I wish was available.

After seeing the original, i was about to suggest increasing the bg on the bottom to extend the space as well, and Chunk was right on it. i usually find myself on the same page as Chunk when I read hios posts. This makes a great image all the better. You must print this one large and frame it up. i really like it. Your contortions paid off I like to hear about one doing whatevr it takes( almost anyway) to get the shot they envision.
btw,, funny how life works. . .most men have a rule about never telling a woman she is wrong. . ;)

That was the only thing that stood out to me. It's right against the bottom of the frame.

    Otherwise, a gorgeous photo!
