I recently went to a rodeo and tried to take some action shots. However, a couple of problems arose.

If I used my telephoto, the shots were blurred because it is not a high dollar lens. But, if I got closer to the action with my 50mm (a faster lens), I got many dirty looks for being in the way. (This shot was---- 50mm f1.4 ISO400 1/90s) Would boosting the ISO have helped or would that have added too much noise? (Pentax K10)

Oh, well, this was one of the best I could take.

If they give you dirty looks, give them one back. Some cameras can handle 800 iso without much noise, others can't. Maybe someone with the same camera will chime in. Otherwise, take a few shots indoors at home at 800 iso, and then you'll know.

Great title. Now the stands dont look that full , so if people want to give you a dirty look ...screw em. Its a great start. It sounds like your still learning to do action shots. Good luck.

The entire image seems a little dark on my monitor.

The best part of the image is confined to the lower right corner, the great bulk of the frame doesn't add much to the image and may actually hurt the impact of the great action in the corner.

I shoot with a K10D and the noise is an acceptable trade off for better lens speed. I usually try to level out at 800. Personally, in this kind of a situation, I would probably have shot at ISO 800 or even 1600 because the action is what is really important and freezing it in motion is a lot more impressive than blurry shapes zooming across the frame. Also remember that noise isn't always a draw back, and unless you are making poster prints of everything it will be largely unnoticed if you nail the excitement of the moment.

As far as the dirty looks go, hey, sometimes that goes with the territory. My thought is until someone says something to you let 'em look. But better still ask for permission and the rules prior to going to the event and then you will feel authorized and less apologetic. Keep shootin'!:thumbsup:

Were you in the way of the cowboys or the spectators?
If it was spectators, I can understand their being upset...they paid to see the action and not the back of a photographers head. If it was the cowboys, then I understand that too as they have a job to do. I'd try to find a spot where I didn't block others views.

I appreciate the feedback. I will bump up the ISO next time and try to get closer to the action.
