    Dilapidated Barn

Here is my first of hopefully many posts here. This photo was shot while traveling and therefore I unfortunately only had one shot of this. I have others photos of this barn but do not like the compositions. Anyway, this was shot with a Nikon D60 and Sigma 10-20mm lens. My standard editing includes an sharpening, levels, saturation, and brightness/constrast. I don't know how to do much more than that.

One thing I'm worried about in this picture is how bright it is (that may sound stupid/other) and if I oversharpened it..

    Welcome to the forum Caleb.

I do like the simple composition to the photo, and the colours look great.

I think what has hurt you the most with this photo is the time of day you shot. If you're travelling, then you don't have much choice. I'd try and reduce the brightness or if you shot in RAW, the exposure level.

hmmm I understand how u feel about the traveling it has happened to me to. But to cheer you up as an average Joe and being somewhat new to photography, I see nothing wrong with the brightness because I wouldn't be saying hey it a little bright. The first thing that went to my mind was COOL BARN.

    Re: Dilapidated Barn

The brightness is a part of the problem, but for me it is not the most important. I think you have too much barn filling in the left side of the frame and then there is nothing but empty sky in the right portion. There is no feeling of balance here, and nothing to lead me into or through the image. It isn't bad, but I think the composition is what holds this one back most. It would have been better if you zoomed in more to focus on the rotted panels and boards, or zoomed out to catch more of the barn and open up some more sky in the left area.
The colors look very good in this.

    Re: Dilapidated Barn

Welcome Caleb - I agree with much of what Gary wrote. I see some good things in this photo, such as the sharpness and cleanness, but I also see a complete lack of mood here. You do have a decent subject but somehow its setting, in the clean field and clear sky, takes a lot away from it. This place would have been better to shoot at sunset I think. I may also have gotten down on the ground and shot upward towards the barn through some grass to amplify the feeling of abandonment. But what I would really like to see is a scarecrow standing in the right side of the frame I guess he was off that day
