    Despondent waffle

Does this work compositionally? Should the boots be cloned out? Other C&C? I'm new to this stuff so any little thing helps! Thanks for looking.

Very interesting image; waffle pattern of the tire tread and the waffle pattern of the waffle. I seem to feel more comfortable if the image were landscape (horizontal), and move the subject away from dead center. The boot is a distraction and adds nothing to the shot. IMO. Edgy. I like it.

    Poor waffle.

I like it. Very odd piece and that's why it's a thumbs up for me!

I'm not even looking at it as a waffle on a snowy road any more, i see it like a painting now.

    i don't mind the boots.

    nice one!

Ooh! Good textures! A nice spot on this one! I don't see a boot so it must have been edited out all ready, but I'm glad you got the waffle. I agree with Liban that it's got a painterly feel to it and I like the waffle smooshed among the snow and tracks. It's quite forlorn and funny all at once.

Good eye. Welcome to the forum Ben! Keep shooting!

    Re: Despondent waffle

I like the boots in there. They give the narrative a little more context. Without would also be great; more like a modern art piece.

Does it work compositionally? I don't really know anything about composition.

I do, however, think the omission of maple syrup is disturbing and lends an air of intrigue (and, yes, solemnity) to the image overall. Why isn't there any? And what does this imply about the owner of the boots?

Anyway... I can't decide which would be better. Winner either way.

Love how the title actually matches the image. The waffle is too centered, but it still works for me. The boots do add to the story, maybe even more boot would be good.
However, this is such a unique shot that I will be probably be coming back to it.

Despondent Waffle....LOL. Sounds like a band name.

    Cool shot.

Regarding the boots... I wouldn't even know they were there if it hadn't been pointed out.

Oh now I see the boot! Keep the boot! Now I'm afraid for the waffle. . . I like it more. Excellent! It's not centered exactly, lord do I know centered, it's just above it by a smidge which is awesome, because I looked.

That's what makes it so great. Above and beyond the lighting, color, and composition is the universality of the situation. I think we'd be lying if we said that there weren't one point or another during which WE felt like that waffle.

    Re: Despondent waffle

But seriously... the color scheme couldn't be more perfect. All whites and earthtones except for the main subject, which really pops and is surprisingly complimentary to everything else in the frame.

Regarding composition... I don't mind the centeredness of the waffle. In fact, I don't see how it could be any other way without drastically reducing the impact and, truthfully, looking stupid.

I was going to say that you might bring up the contrast up in the boots to make them stand out a little more, but on second look, I really don't think so. I like how they're almost subliminally "there."

I'm not sure I could've have planned a shot like this. Did you?

In any case, a fantastic image.

Thanks all for the comments. I'm not sure what might have worked better compositionally, in regards to the waffle being centered. I invite anyone to post different crops that might work better, if you would like.

Lol, no, definitely not planned. One the one hand, this was what the late Bob Ross (the painter) would have referred to as a "happy accident", but on the other hand the waffle was supposed to be my breakfast at the beginning of a verrry long work day...so I guess it wasn't such a happy accident in that sense.

I think the only way a shot like this could have been planned would be as a result of copious amounts of hallucinogenic drug use, lol.

    Re: Despondent waffle

First off, I love the title. . .and I really enjoy the concept here of the waffle sitting in the waffle-like tire tracks. The boot is a big plus here. We don't recognize/ackowledge it right away, but is one of those hidden treasures in a photograph that when discovered later bring a whole new meaning and appreciation for the piece. It stays

I have to say though that the composition is not working for me, although I feel there is a good aspect to having the waffle centered...it emphasizes the despondent feel. There is a greenish/yellow tint throughout that just personally does not feel right or appeal to me. . .subjective here really.
I find that there is too much included here as in the snow on each side. I do see the second boot up in the left center area and perhaps you wanted to keep that in, but personally I feel one boot, on the right is enough and tells a story.
I do think its important to keep some snow on each side for context at the very least but I think there is too much here. The centering of the waffle works here but I think would work even better a bit off center and in balance so to speak with the boot. A slightly tighter crop bringing us in a little closer to the "action' and patterns.

I'll take you up on your asking for a variation of the crop and so here is mine. I don't know that this works any better than your original, but something was just not quite feeling right and I'm sorta waffling back and forth on it...(insert drum roll and cymbal crash here)
There is no right or wrong to this, and it seems your getting good feedback on the image as it is but this is my take on a crop and some slight color balance tweaking.

Thanks for posting this photo, I hope no one was hurt or have went hungry in the making of this art. . .
