    DeSoto Falls

One of the managers at work bought his wife a digital Rebel for Christmas. He brought it by my office today so that I could give it a test drive, and I knew just where to go. DeSoto Falls is just 10 miles from where I work so I drove out to take some test shots there. I only had one hour to learn the camera and take some test shots so go a little easy on me. I would greatly appreciate some good input on how I could go back to the falls and improve on these types of photos.

By the way, the main falls drops about 100 feet. It is truly a beautiful place.

    Thanks!

I'm a sucker for waterfalls... I would say that you should use a slower shutter speed. Try to get at least a half second or more. Two seconds or so would be great. It really makes the water looks soft and pillowy. I like the third one the best, and it's the one that begs for blurred water the most. All nice shots, though!

Thanks for the comments, Outdoorsman. I too, love the soft look of moving water in a stream or waterfall. Shutter speed for each of these photos was 1/13.

Beautiful shots eagle_eye. Even with the shutter speed at 1/13, it still looks just perfect. My favourite has got to be the second one, with the beautiful smaller fall in the front and the big one in the background.

    Very pretty.

What a great place to shoot !!!
The sticks (limbs) in the foreground are very distracting. Fine an angle or place the will get rid of them.
You have the opportunity for some great pix here. Keep working on it...

Photo 2 is my favorite and i think the pattern occuring on the waterfall in the back adds to the quality of the picture. Would like to see it without the dead wood in the foreground..

    cheers.

Thanks to each of you for the comments!

My favorite is the second one. I plan to go back and work around the dead wood. I knew it was there of course but like I said, on my lunch hour I didn’t have time to think about much since it was a strange camera to me.

If the weather permits, I will go back in the next few days for a re-shoot.

    Thanks again,

    Dudley

I love the second one the most as well, if you have photoshop, I'd recommend clone stamping out the branch and the yellow marks on the middle of the rock in the waterfall. Other than that, great pictures and a beautiful location.

I love the location, and these are some nice shots, except, as mentioned for the deadwood. I need to get myself over to DeSoto one of these days. It's not that far from here, and there are some beautiful locations.

I too am a sucker for waterfalls! My favorite is the third shot because it doesn't have that anoying stick in it.

Fyffe AL? I heard a comedian talking about Fyffe AL once. Something along the lines of everyone there seeing UFO's or something to that affect. Any truth to that?

Come on over to DeSoto Falls Fadderuri, it’s a beautiful place.

Michael, the comedian was correct about the place. Fyffe is known for the UFO sightings. I havn't heard of any UFO's spotted in many years. I guess they're somewhere else. Ha Ha

Nice shots Eagle_Eye! I really like the third one best! I remember swimming above the dam as a kid.
But, there was never that much water going over the top. Have you ever taken any pictures down at a place called "buck's pocket". I thought of that place Saturday, while over in the Greenbrier area of the Smokies.
    Keep up the good work.
