    Re: Deer on the horizon

Indeed you were! The geese and position of the deer make this not just another deer shot.

    Re: Deer on the horizon

Bakerman - First of all welcome to PR Forums. I like the overall composition of the shot and think that the sunset colors are nice (though not super, but nice isn't bad). I also like how the birds are doing their thing there. But, somehow the shot seems like it's a tease, for I think the subject is by far the two deer and their interaction, and they are just so small in the image. Ahh! I am betting that you were on the end of your zoom range too (!?)

    Again, welcome.

    Re: Deer on the horizon

This is a very nice composition. Right place at the right time, certainly. I like the narrow edge of foreground and the strong silhouettes of the deer. A bit soft, though. I'm curious if this is a crop from a much larger image only because of the quality of the image here. That could very well be attributed to resizing for the web.
    Very nice work

I think the geese really adds to the picture. You might consider cloning the deer on the right. I have read it is compositionaly better to have odd numbers of objects, 1, 3, 5 ect. Maybe some thoughts on that from others.

    Re: Deer on the horizon

I would rather get a good shot than to "build" a good shot with editing. I have nothing against it, I just have not used it much. I may use it more in the future? All I did to this photo was straighten it and sharpen it. No cropping. I did resize it for the post. And yes, I was at the limits of my zoom. My opinion, to add deer may make a more "appealing" picture but would in a sense change it into something that it is not. Thanks for the comments, they are welcomed.

    Re: Deer on the horizon

Bakerman, you will find that the issues involving post processing can be kind of a touchy subject with some people. I myself enjoy the real art of photography rather than heavy editing. Sometimes I will remove unwanted or out of place objects but not too often. Some will say I shoot like a photojournalist but I enjoy the more pure images. I also understand that some need heavy edits to keep their business and make their images appeal to their clients. Thats just part of being a photographer.

As far as your image, it looks to be another one of those once in a life time shots. I love the detail in the buck's antlers, they are positioned perfectly. That is what I notice the most. The geese, you could not have planed it better than that. For a D50 it is a strong image for a camera that some have given up and put out to pasture. A true testament to the quality of Nikon cameras, you should think about upgrading to a D80 or D200. Or just go with the best, Olympus Digital!!

All in all I think it is one for the books, a keeper for sure. I also look forward to more posts from you.
