Help Please - Choice of Shot

I took a shot down at the park today. An average scene with someone walking, though I liked his hat and the fact he was carrying a picture frame, making the shot a bit more interesting. It had and was snowing at the time of the shot.

My dilemma; I converted the shot to black and white which is nice, given the otherwise bland colours in the park at this time of the year. I then went to Photoshop to practise the technique of motion blur which I learnt how to do yesterday. I don't know however which is actually the better shot. The black and white no PS, the black & white with PS or finally the colour edition with PS?

Appreciate if you could give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance for taking the time to comment and advise.

I love the 1st one. It has a nice natural and classic feel to it. The others make me feel as if the gentleman is walking at warp speed.

The first is very nice. Maybe remove the bench that is right behind him. the motion blur looks as flybye said, like he is moving at warp speed.

I'm tending to agree with you, my personal preference is for the 1st as well. I didn't see the warp speed, but now you mention it does look a bit Flash G... Would it work if I said he was in a hurry? Thanks. S

Re: Help Please - Choice of Shot

I'd like to see #1 in colour.

But the artificial motion blur - no thanks.
I think it's over the top, and the unblurred snow by the foot looks unreal, as does the colour shift as the shadow blurs.

I actually like the effect of the third one,but you do need to use a blur that does not look like motion blur.

Hard to say.....I think the motion blur is way overdone, try making it more subtle and see how it looks. From the 3 above I like also the first one, but I have to say no. 2 is interesting.

What he said, I like the effect of the second two, would like them more subtle though so it looks more like a panning shot then star trek.

The second and third are interesting but I do prefer the first, also.

Re: Help Please - Choice of Shot

OK, here they are; Smart Wombat, I include as the first the original colour.

The second 2 are the re-done motion shots in colour and B&W. I prefer the B&W as it eliminates some of the defects in the colour created when I extract the person in a copy of the layer.

    Thanks again.

I think the speed blur would be more suited to a cycle or car

Re: Help Please - Choice of Shot

I really liked #1 in your original post..Then I saw #1a in your last reply. The color really brought out the detail in that guy. Like the incredible detail of the snow dropping off the bottom of his shoe that I didn't see in #1..There both great shots, I just cant make my mind up which I like better. After flipping back and fourth for a while I'm going with 1a. The blurr in the other shots I could do without, but the idea is great.

The first one still but in black and white like originally posted. I'm curious as to why your interested in adding Motion blur to this as the man is just walking and probably not all that fast in the snow. If anything, I would experiment with a gaussian blur to see what happens when the trees and scenery behind him are a bit less dominating.
I don't feel it needs anything, but if you wanted to try a blur i think the gaussian blur would be worth experimenting with.

Stick with #1a, and maybe desaturate the background slightly.
Also looks like on downsizing it got over-sharpened because of the light border around his coat. I wouldn't expect to see that in a full size image, or print.

I don't think the blur is working.
The original image is great though.

Thanks all again for the additional feedback.

Gary, I was just playing around with Photoshop as this is all I know what to do with Photoshop for the time being. I will however give the Gaussian blur a try and see what that produces. Thanks.

You have all been so kind to provide advice and comments and I thank you for that.
