    More Games

Here's another shot I did a similar technique on. This one had a 10 or 8, can't remember which, second exposure time as opposed to the 4 seconds the other had.

I really like this one, well done!
I never really tried double exposure and it's great to see these kind of results.

This can also be done in Photoshop, but some people dislike this idea, since the complete photograph has to be done with the camera... even when it's the year 2004

Let's please not forget that photography is more than just 100% camera and that it's NO sin to take it a bit further with digital software. A talented guy like Andrzej Dragan shows that on his web site: http://andrzejdragan.com/foto/nowawyrobniaeng.html

There are lots of famous photographers who went in that direction, but the basis will always be; good photography.

Off topic maybe, but I just felt the need to bring this up in the context of this particular shot, with nothing but the intention to try to inspire others to experiment with other approaches once in while.

Thanks for sharing it with us ;)

    Thanks JoeD!

While I can understand the wanting to do it all in camera, and would prefer to do it that way myself, I can also see where there is need for Photoshop or other image editing programs, and will often spend a lot of time editing and playing with my photos as well. I have come up with some really great images using PS, and won't discount it altogether.

This shot however was mainly done in camera, and I had to take advantage of long exposure times since there's no digital camera that can do double exposures. The trick was to be quick enough when changing the sides of the dice so the camera wouldn't capture the hand. The only PS work done on this image was to convert it to B&W, boost the contrast a bit, and resize.

BTW, Andrzej Dragan has some really fantastic images there, thank you for posting a link!

I really like this one as well. Less of a creepy feel than the other, but still incredibly interesting.

I wonder if you used a shorter shutter and could get a blur of a dice falling if that would create an interesting effect as well (same with the domino's falling).

That's not really a comment on this shot, just me pondering aloud...

    Thanks CaraRose!

I tried the shorter shutter speed to try and get more of an action shot, but after an hour it just wasn't happening, especially when the dice kept jumping out of the picture. I haven't tried it with the domino's yet, and may do so one day, but that last shot of them sort of put me off trying anything else for awhile. It took nerves of steel to keep setting them up and knocking them down the first time.

    Hi Lyra,
Great experiment, I tried to do double exposure myself, I didn't get them right quit yet. What I have tried in the past is take pictures of paintings, and then of statues, to make the painting look like a cool background. Different exposure time, etc.. was kind of cool...
Just curious, are you using film or digital? Do the digital SLR allow double exposure?
Opinions I got lots, expertise none!! Hmm… except for giving opinions!!

    Thanks kamboura!

I have yet to try a double exposure, but will when I get a film camera. This is a single exposure that I took with a digital camera. I know compact digitals don't allow double exposures and I don't believe digital SLR's do either, but with a quick hand you can create a photo that looks as though it's a double exposure.
