    Dave,
    The top one works much better for me. The huge leaf in the bottom shot distracts my view from the dahlia.

    Dave - I like the top shot the best. But the background is a little distracting... I can't decide if the flower should have nothing behinid it, like the top part, or something light behind it to make it stand out, like the bottom part. Hmm.

    The bottom shot, I sort of agree that the leaf (looks like lettuce) in the foreground is distracting and blocking a little. But what I think it really needs is better sharpness. Just seems a tad bit soft. It's hard sometimes to get flower shots this close because the wind blows them around so easily, and the closer you are the more amplified that effect is. Maybe you can bring along a work crew with big boards to block the wind

    Hmm, I guess there is too much leaf in the bottom one. Maybe if the flower looks good today I can try it again with a tripod this time.

    I like the closer image, depth of field is nice, and the colors are very good. The smaller flower might be a bit too distracting, however.
