Crosses

Gary's shot of utilities reminded me of these that I took back in May.
Which composition do you prefer?

Clever title and I go with the second because it works with the title better, although I think it is a shame that I can't see the entire 'cross' on the right..

I like the idea.
Almost always when you have sky you need clouds. other wise its just too dull.
Also as the other person said I think you should get a slightly different vantage point so that you can see more of the churches cross.
Do you do much photoshop? If you dont you should try to mess around with some of their exposure tools and coloring. It definatly adds to a photograph. Also as long as contrast and color are the only things changed its still tecnically unedited from a film standpoint.

I agree, the second one portrays the title much more than the first. My only thing is with the tree being a bigger subject in the second one, you kind of lose the far left "cross" bottom part, but I think it still works.

Chunk, I like both but I way prefer the first image. The composition is excellent and the three poles look as if their marching up the street. The church steeple on the other side balances the comp very well I would only suggest a quick levels adjustment. auto color actually worked quite well on this. Now those are some Public Servants!

Herriot - I agree that the shot would be better with more space on the right. I did about the same thing in a second shot - don't know where my head was...fixating on the church's cross I guess.

Noah - Thanks. Not sure that clouds are always better than a plain sky. Sometimes I like having an uncluttered backdrop for a cluttered subject, which this is. I picked that angle to center the church's cross in the open space between the poles so there wasn't too much choice in the orientation of the cross. I was glad that it was still identifiable as a cross.
I don't have any problem with folks editing photos to get them to feel like they want. I'm not doing any technical documentation - I think of it more as art work.

Jared - thanks for your response. The church/steeple was the first thing that caught my eye as I was looking around after taking a shot of a different subject. Then I noticed the poles echoing the shape of the cross and took the first shot. I wasn't sure that the connection was strong enough and moved around to find the second lineup.

Gary - I'm always happy to get your reaction to one of my shots. You are right about the color - thanks.

My turn! I like them both a great deal. And at first preferred the second, but the more I see of the first, and the procession of "crosses", it's won out! Great shots.
