    Cropped Circle

OK, it's not what you thought. It's tracks in the snow again in front of my office building.

How far up is your office

Interesting pattern in the middle of the tire tracks. Looks as if someone put a squirt of power on to intiate the turn. Lovely shot

I'm on the ninth floor but this was taken from the conference room on the 14th (top) floor.
I think this is just the normal tracking pattern for a turning car. The difference in radius of all the tires is why differentials are needed in the power train - all the wheels are turning at different speeds.

    Dear Chunk,

A lovely radial pattern here. I especially like the gradual fading of the snow from the center. Almost looks like a stylized sun, or Aztec (well, maybe ). Great composition.

P.S. Did you shoot b&w or convert from color?

Lovely shot. It seems almost like an artistic piece, the snow melting on the main circle seems almost painted. Lovely shot and great elevated angle.

    Good shooting,

    Re: Cropped Circle

Because this was taken through thick tinted glass with the camera very close to the glass there is a falloff of light from the upper left to the lower right (at least I think that's the reason). Is there someway to make a graduated correction in PS?

    I'm jealous!

I work on the 24th floor, and always see these amazing scenes & patterns (like this) that I would love to photograph from a helicopter. I love the composition, and that it's in black and white.
I might up the contrast just a little more, but then again, it could be this monitor in the internet cafe where I sit and type.

    Two thumbs up!

Sorry, I missed your question before. I shot in digital color (original posted here). I had done a white balance a few minutes earlier when shooting from the next room and hadn't realized that there was a different color window in this conference room so I got this funky color. I cleaned up alright but there were a few spots of color where the tire tracks ran over painted markings on the pavement and I thought they were a distraction. Once I tried the BW I really liked it.

Another great pic. I had to look twice at the centre of the turn arond because has the texture of water colours. Very nicely done. I wish it snowed in Oz.

    Re: Cropped Circle

I didn't think it would be what I expected

The tracking pattern is normal, apart from the straight lines bottom right.
I guess the car came in top right, around the circle.
Looks natural for a LHD driver, making a left turn around the circle after entering from the road top right.
Stopped at the bottom, pointing about 45 degrees.
The patterns in the snow there indicate it might have used front ABS in stopping.
Exit from the left hand front, walked around to the rear of the car.
Can't make out he passenger tracks though.
Then pulled off but with a sharper left turn exiting in a straight line.
Car looks like its wheelbase is about 1.5x track width, mid-size not compact.
You can see the rear wheels still follow a curve (but tighter radius) while the front wheels go off straight.
Straightline exit has wider turn bacl onto the road, again looks like an exit onto the right hand side of the road rather than an entry from the left hand side (so likely a LHD car in country that drives on the right).
Probably you could work out the pedestrian patterns from a full resolution image.
The car that left the grey tracks (not the black ones) had a tighter turning curcle.

Oh, and by the way I like the photo

    What color was the car?

Wow Paul, I didn't notice hardly any of that. I did think that the person leaving the footprints across the top of the circle probably has a bunyon on his left foot and the right shoe may not be tied quite as tight as the left.
Seriously, thanks for looking and for the compliment.
