first is OOF... second is fantastic (just a bit soft, some PP sharpening may help), it may be good to clone out the green spots on the pumpkin, but that's quite nit picky. If you're using auto focus, you have a AF-lock... so you can focus on the eyes/face and then hold the button to keep the focus where you want it.
It's just not sharp where it needs to be (the eyes). Depending on what size you print this at or if you can do some extreme sharpening, it may turn out fine.
If you were using autofocus, which mode were you using? (AF-Continuous or AF-Shutter... also AF-Auto but that won't help find the problem)
I took these of my daughter in her halloween costume.
Such a cute kid! I am having the sharp focus problem as well. #2 is my choice. With her hand showing and her eyes to the camera, it would be absolutely adorable.
