A Couple of Gulls (that's 'Gulls', not 'Girls'!)

    Hi all

Amazing the connections you find when you're tagging your photos with keywords .. here are two gulls .. the first is on Murano, which is one of the islands in the Venice Lagoon. The second is off Rovinj (Croatia).

As always, any comments are appreciated. Both pics taken with Pentax 80-320mm lens.

    Cheers
    Mike

I like the lighting in the first image but think there is too much frame space above the bird.

I really like the composition of the second image although I would check to see how a small crop of the top and left would look.
    No, I DON'T need that.

Mike, I think the first image is too centered. I keep seeing a horizontal frame for it with the bird and perch on the right looking out into the rest of the image.
The second image is quite great. Excellent composition and timing. The wing position, sky, placement of the land. . .everything working well

Matis, welcome to the forum. It would be appropriate to post your Gull shots in a thread of your own for critique, or, you could post them all in the viewfinder forum where everyone can enjoy them and add to them if they like. This forum is for Critique and Mike has posted two of his images for our members to comment on and/or suggest ways to improve.
You can make a comment on his images and also start a thread of your own for comments and critique on your as well.
Have alook at the Critique Forum guide lines at the top of the page.
btw, you also have some very nice shots and hope you atsrt your own thread to display them.

Mike the second shot is really lovely and what a difference that triangle of hillside makes to the shot.
The first shot, while a very nice shot of the bird, just lacks something and I feel a landscape format here would have worked well because there is a lovely blurred background and I think this would have benefited by having more of it.

The first one is a little soft and needs to be cropped tighter.

I like the second one. Composition is great.

    Nice

Thanks for sharing photos of seagulls in other parts of the world. I think the photos have good colors. I do think the gull in the first photo is too centered though.

Re: A Couple of Gulls (that's 'Gulls', not 'Girls'!)

Thanks guys as always for your helpful words. I agree on retrospect that the first one is too centred - I was trying to get a little Venetian architecture in there, but it wasn't as successful as I thought it might be. Oh well

The second was taken from a boat doing a tour of the waters off Rovinj - the gull was stationary relative to the boat, which made it easier to get it sharp.

    Cheers
