Could these work for my series?

Finally got some of my slide film back and want some help from the good people here. For the series I would like to put together dealing with paterns/textures , do any of these images fit that? Comments welcome.

Forgot to mention, the poll is mulitple choice.

Re: Could these work for my series?

    Hi SRobb,

I chose #1 because it seemed the most textured and interesting of the three as they are. #2 seems a little too dark as it stands right now but could be interesting with some post processing work. #3 I like the textures and the layers of things to look and the colors but it seems like the focus is too soft. Of course this might be the effect of the scan from slide and the compression. So with all that said #1, without any other knowledge about your project or what you intend to do with it, seems to fit your requirements the best. Good luck with your series!

Re: Could these work for my series?

I chose the second picture because I felt that the first picture was a bit bland and could possibly be a little more interesting with a bit of color boost, the third picture to me seems out of focus and just not cutting it for me, and the sun area seems a little odd in there.
Now the second picture, although it took me a few seconds to figure out what it was, I felt it had the most character......I think I would crop out the black 'stripe' on the left side of the picture.......other then that, I think it is a good picture!

Re: Could these work for my series?

Thanks for the replies so far. I was pretty sure I would use the first one, but was not sure about the 2nd. They are untouched escept for resizing so I will have to see what I can do with them later.

Re: Could these work for my series?

I chose 1 and 2 hope you don't mind. I think a bit of post processing would bring these up beautifully. I think number 3 has already been crtiqued enough.

Re: Could these work for my series?

I am rather intrigued by the second one. I like the fact that it could be an oil painting and with the exception of the right side of the image I probably couldn't tell the difference. It has a dark, depressive felling that communicates a lot for me. If that were in my binder of slides I would devote a good length of time to it playing with a crop and tweaking it for printing.

    Personally,

Number one is the only one that does anything for me. The second one seems too candid for me and the third one appears soft and blurred. The first one has depth and some great colors.

Interested to see how your series turns out,

Re: Could these work for my series?

I voted for two. The first lacks punch to me. Maybe tweaking it a bit on the curves might bring out more, but it just lacks something for m.e The blurriness on the right edge of the third bothers my eyes (being blind as a bat, I don't care for blurriness; I get enough of that on my own pics! )

On the second, my first impression was "That's a weird tree". It took me a while to realize it was a rock. I think it could stand a little something as well (maybe a bit of contrast? not sure) but it's still a great image (well, all three are great, but the second is my favorite)

I am going with number 2 as well, purely because the sense of intrigue far outweighs the others.

    Good luck!

Re: Could these work for my series?

My vote goes to the second photo. Mostly for the color and texture. The large fissure in the rock with the smaller fractures around it provide relief to give this a sense of age. You might try bringing up the level of the gray tones (a curve tweak would probably do it) to make the saturation of the colors pop a bit more.

The first image as it stand is just sedimentary rock, though it looks to have potential either in a monochrome (sepia or the like) or as a higher contrast b/w. Some good lines and shadows.

I really see what you were trying for in the third photo, but the DOF and softness issues are not working for me in this instance.

The second and third seems to fit a common theme quite well.

Yes, I know they are edge of the film frame, but all three need the black edges cropped.

Re: Could these work for my series?

Thanks all for comments so far. Looks like #2 could be winning. I am a little surprised, but happy at the same time. Some of my friends/family really don't understand me taking images like this. Wait till they see what I do for the next two series I am thinking of. I will try to work on the first two and see what I can come up with.

Re: Could these work for my series?

It was a no brainer for me, number 1. The other two fit the subject of the series but the images themselves look dull and uninteresting. Picture 1 is pleasing to the eye, the overall aesthetics are very nice. It is the strongest of the bunch, by far.

Re: Could these work for my series?

Thanks, Gary and others. Here are the two main images after being worked on some. For both, I did some resizing bumping up the pixel count, contrast mask and tweaking the levels. Since doing things like levels is still a little new to me, let me know if you think I helped, or hurt, the images. If you make suggestions, please keep in mind I use Gimp instead of PS.

Re: Could these work for my series?

I think the first image of the original bunch looks better and did not need any or much tweaking. What you have done now is lost the contrast and deep shadows that really was the power of that image in the first place. The second one you edited does not look to be the same picture as the one you posted in the first batch. The original one posted looks better to me anyway

Re: Could these work for my series?

I think you are right, Gary. I forgot to mention that I had cropped both images, also. That could be one reason the second does not look the same. Guess now the question would be does everyone think the originals look better, or the edited ones?

Re: Could these work for my series?

I agree with Gary, the original number 1 was perfect as is.

That being said, I do like the edit to number 2.
