I disagree, the tone of this picture is magnificent. There are no sparatic colour schemes, or deeper meaning that would be revealed through the absence of colour. The brick wall looks beautiful and that ice almost looks fake. I also like the blue hints of reflected sky in the ice.
Great shot, Chunk! The brick wall ties it together beautifully. The old style lamp makes me think 1880 or something. The lighting on the lamp is perfect. Brings out all the detail. well composed and nice tonality overall.
This I like a lot. The colour of the wall really creates a good background for the icicles and the lamp melting into the ice is terrific composition. The sky reflecting in the ice gives it that coold feeling which ties in with the salt coming out of the lower bricks.
Now any chance you can send some ice over to England - we never seem to get these conditions here.

Andrew
I think it would be flat in b/w. (This coming from a true b/w lover.) I could be wrong. That ice is unreal! (Keep it up there, the only ice I wanna see is in my drink oh and in the posts 'round here)

Thanks to everyone for your comments, I really appreciate them all.
I was wondering whether anyone would find that not having the icycles attached to anything in the picture would be a problem. I sometimes want to have the edge of the roof there but I think I like it a little better without. I didn't capture any zoomed in with the roof but here's a section of a wider shot. Which version do you think is better.
I'd gladly send ALL the ice we have over to England (or Alabama ). Winter is not my favorite time of year.

One of my goals in time is to have a home filled with wonderful images that only I have taken. If this were mine, it would not doubt make it on the wall. Unfortunately, it's NOT mine. Great image. I have no advice to make it better. I agree with others, however, #1 for me. The roof attached is distracting.
I don't feel the roof is a distraction at all, but feel that it is not adding and is not needed. I like the first image far better only because the lighting seems more dynamic and bricks appear sharper ( maybe due to being post edited as the last one was not?) Also the aspect ratio is now differnt (taller) with the roof included. I feel you should stick with the first image as it is working very well. less is more, perhaps
Gary, the original post is almost full frame while the second is only about 1/4 of a frame as well as having a bit more exposure. The post processing may have also made for a bit of difference. I, too, like the color on the wall better in the first one and I think there's a better feel of distance between the wall and the icycles for whatever reasons. Thanks for helping me think about the nitty-gritty details here - it's always surprising how small a difference can make the feel of a shot quite different.
AA20D - If you'd like to have other folks stuff hang on your walls as place keepers for those anticipated shots of your own and would like to do an photo swap for this one, give me a PM and we'll do that. Thanks for the very nice compliment.

NO THANK YOU! You can keep your ice and snow...that's why I moved down here anyway! (Anybody seen The Day After Tomorrow? ;) ;) )
I'm sorry, I went off topic a bit there. I like the first one better, but I don't seem to get distracted by the roof.
