    Color Makes a Difference

Which of these two versions of this scene do you prefer, if either?

Same image.. the bluer one is the original scan. The second one is with the Nikon Coolscan's Reconstruction of Color (ROC) turned on.

The second of these which has far warmer colours works for me Greg, Love the prints in the sand and the overall composition.

Hi GB. I like the corrected version. It's a lovely shot, but I wonder how it would look with a little of the sky cropped?

I like the second version too. much more life and pop to it. The original has a different feel, not quite as impactful but pleasant in it's own way..

    Re: Color Makes a Difference

Thanks guys. It's unanimous then - the real, warmer color one has the most appeal. These things are good to know!!!

    Re: Color Makes a Difference

I hate to be a go-along kind of guy but I agree that the "corrected" version looks a lot better.

I do wish you had pointed your camera a little lower to get more sand in the foreground and less sky on the top. There, now I feel better! ;-)
    No, I DON'T need that.

MB - Thanks for feedback. Yeah it's always hard to determine how much sky vs land to show. I play with the classic compositional ratios, but they're just guidelines. I think I should just use the common sense rule If there's something interesting there, show more of it or something like that !

    Re: Color Makes a Difference

Obviously the "corrected" one. Not only is the first one technically incorrect, but the blue overtone makes it dull.

F-15 - What do you mean technically incorrect? It's the same photo, just with different color.

Sometimes blue is soothing, though it's probably the wrong situation for such.

    Re: Color Makes a Difference

Color balance. The second one has corrected color.

In a darkroom, when printing color prints, you usually have to change the color pack(color balance) because an image will have a blue cast, or a yellow cast, or a red cast, or whatever. You balance the colors so that the image is more neutral, this is what the "ROC" option does for you.

Yes, some people like a color cast, and depending on the image, it can be what one wants, but, it's "technically incorrect."

    Hope this helps.
