The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this images was to choose a different time of day to reshoot the scene. The lighting looks very harsh and contrasty (mid day?). Try again, early in the morning, or late in the afternoon. An overcast day would help to reduce the contrast as well. I think showing more of the fence would also help the composition as well.

I think you need to hone in on the subject, in this the subject and backdrop seem sort of thrown together. And the small difference in the top corner is too little and too much. The angle isn't helping much either, create a dramatic effect by skewing to a more arbitrary angle, this perpendicular straight-on type angle is really not doing any favors to the composition.

I agree also with MJS, the harsh sun is really leaving an unpleasant color cast and very harsh shadows. Come back closer to dusk and dawn to really see the best color.

Dan - didn't see your second one. It looks much better, the subject and backdrop have now become two unique things. Centering the subject works sometimes, but not here, particularly with as small as the subject is here. Get closer to the subject (or crop closer), and place him looking, walking, or flying *into* the larger crop area.

Color also seems a bit flat, a tonal adjustment in photoshop could help a lot. The dof is way too wide (using either too wide a focal range or too narrow an f-stop). Isolate the subject by making only it in field. What were your metering values? (shutter/aperture/ISO/focal distance).

*edit - scratch that, I checked your EXIF and you are using a Kodak point and shoot. A lot of my comments could only apply assuming you had SLR control (dof, flat tones, etc)....

yes just a point and shoot. a SLR is too expensive on my disability. Is this one better? Have to bee careful with bees - they'll sting the fire out of you.

I thought yuour first photo was colorful and poster like but it is seriously overexposed. Sunlit areas are washed out. I would try to reduce the gamma by a stop or two and maybe increase saturation. You might also try reducing contrast and sharpening (but Im the sharpening man).

The bee shots are better but could use a good cropping. Do a google search on "rule of thirds" and crop accordingly, they'll really pop then!
