This is a nice shot. I really like the subject matter and I think it's an excellent choice for B&W. The only thing that bothers me is that the bright white areas of the sky are distracting. My suggestion would be to shoot this when the over head sky is blue (not overcast), and use a polarizer to darken it even more. I think the composition is good as is, but you might also try shooting from a different angle so the sky would be more obscured by other trees. Just my 2 cents.
All, thanks for your comments, glad that you can see why I took this and converted to black and white, sadly the image has lost some quality in resizing for the forum but that's nothing new...
Paul - Agreed, the sky is a bit distracting, I might be able to do something there.
its a really cool shot....I would concentrate on bringing out the actual tree and roots..sometimes correcting a blown out sky can create more problems than it creates .and if its close by...the suggestion of morn or dusk is great....take lots of different brackets...if all else fails i would also like to see this in color with the brown of the trunk and the green leaves hued and saturated...nice subject and picture.
