    Christmas Kitty

Ok, I'm new to DSLR photography, and I feel like this shot is one I really like. I particularly like the placement of my cat off to the side. I would have preferred a softer bg, though. What suggestions and critiques do you guys have for it? Thanks in advance!

Nice shot of the cat with good depth of field.
I'd crop it to a vertical format though, even getting rid of the bear ornament.

I love the sharpness and the cat as the subject. I agree with Frog though that the background ornaments are distracting. It almost seems like the cat is looking at the bear as it's toy, but we know that the bear is off to the side. How did you get the cat to pose for you

You know how cats are -- they love to stare out the window. I just shot him a couple times while he was gazing.

I wish I would have taken that ornament off the tree before I took the pic.

Here are a couple more; fun but not composed the best:

OK, I did some touch ups in photoshop with the original picture that I posted in this thread. With the bear gone, and the conversion to gray scale, does anyone like it better?

    Nope! :-) :-)

I think Frog's suggestion is a good idea.

I'd try a square format (like a 6x6 aka Hasselblad) just to be different ;-) If I keep the bear, I'd put a gradient filter on that side of the photo to darken it and to de-emphasize it. I could also adjust the levels of the cat side to brighten it up just a bit.

I like the details of the cat. Exposure looks good. Your b&w version made the cat too dark and it lost some of the details. By doing that, I think you've ruined some of the best things in your photo.

Oh, as you've probably noticed, my 6x6 version will not have the left side of your original version :-)

Good suggestions. I'll play around with it a bit more.

Thanks for the great idea of taking a better pic of my cat. (That's if she ever gets out from under the blanket).
