    Butterfly (off series)

I went out for a shot with few friends yesterday. A friend of mine let me his Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (talk about a manly lense!). It's pretty huge and heavy (by my standarts at the very least) but it gets the job done.

    Re: Butterfly (off series)

Seb, this shot to me seems to be off balance, way to empty on the left while all the content is on the right. other than that great focus and dof. it might have been the only shot the butterfly let you take, but it just seems wrong, it might be because the flower stock leaves on the edge and not the bottom of the photo, in which case a crop might help.

Man, that looks like a nice lens. Nice colors, bright and sharp. I would somewhat agree with Dylan about it being just a tad off balance (though most customers purchasing a print wouldn't even mind or notice for that matter), but this is a nice picture nonethless.

    Re: Butterfly (off series)

Hey, Seb - nice to see a different side of you At least different since I've been here.

I like the composition as I tend to shoot "environmental macros" myself and showing the surroundings can often express much more than just a tight shot of the subject.

My only pick is that too much of the butterfly is obstructed from view. I know, getting the little buggers to read your mind doesn't always work and you take what you are given. So, in other words, great shooting!

    Re: Butterfly (off series)

Seb - wow, different composition here alright.

I think this is multiple shots in one, meaning that it seems like there are several independent things happening at one time (if that makes any sense !?). If you crop out the top 2/3 of the shot for ex, it looks like foliage in a fishtank or underwater in a stream. The butterfly on the nice pink branch could be a crop unto itself. The background vertical grasses in the top left seem to belong in a separate photo.......... Very unusual.

Dylan: Thanks for commenting. I like to produce compositions with slightly unusual ratios.
I agree that a crop of the bottom would probably simplify the shot and make it easier on the eyes.

schrackman: That lense is a big boys toy and it is priced accordingly. I'd like to get one but it doesn't quite fit into my budget! lol Thanks for commenting.

Loupey: I got three shots and this was the "better" one. I agree that this is not ideal. I should have settled down with a tripod and waited quite some time in an attempt to get a better view. Thanks for sharing your view.

GB: Euh, should I take this positively or negatively??? lol I think that I now see what you mean but I am not sure if it is a desirable effect in a photograph or not.
