    Some very old barns

    Did I do them justice?

Roger, I like this scene, and your composition is about right. This looked tough as this is a super high contrast situation, but you seem to have achieved the perfect compromise between highs and lows. A bit of detail lost in the snowy area out in the middle and may be a little detail lost in the shadows of the immediate foremost part of the structure. It looks as if there is some detail intact in the structures front area and I would only suggest try to bring out a bit more from it. There looks to be some criss cross patterns with wood beams going on, and bringing that out some more will be great.
I love the high contrast and starkness of this picture. Love the texture of the snow here as well.
This is simple, but has many treats for the eyes and mind.

    Gary,

Is this better, I guess I went a bit far with the pp work. It seems to get darker after the downsize to post here.

Roger, the barn area is perfect. You kept the mystery there while bringing out just enough details to enjoy and be more intrigued. The bright snow area looks unnatural now. I don't think you can bring back any detail there other than softly cloning in more from the foreground using a low opacity setting. Personally, I think the bright snow area can remain as it did in the original. The shadow detail was really helpful and makes the good image so much more enjoyable. The only thing left to consider is straightening the vertical with the frame using the perspective aspect in the crop tool.
    I really like this shot.

The extra detail in the second shot really makes it, but for some reason that dark rectangle on the floor bothers me just ever so slightly.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

    Gary, hmnix

Thanks the large square thing is a board - lots of work being undertaken to keep it looking this good

Gary, Taken your advice and created this version which I'm quite pleased with and had to use skew to get the verticals vertical, I also cloned in some snow onto the floor.

Question is how did I do on the cloning?

This looks great now. The snow area looks fine to me, nice job. I like the extra bit of sharpening that brings out those wonderfuls details in the old wood. It looks like you did this work to the web image by the looks of the effect on your watermark. I'm sure you can reproduce the edits on the full high res version as well.
    Wonderful image.

This was like reading a tutorial and very helpful as an interested third party. BTW, I love how the image of the barn turned out. It's beautiful.

    Wonderful image.
    Gary,

Thanks for all the help with this, I was struggling with the PP'ing. Just for information this was taken with a Nikon L6 compact in JPG, with me hanging over a secuirty fence because of the building work.

The last image, I copied the snow from another image of the barn where I had exposed for the snow. As for sharpening, this time I did all the work on the original from within PSE and not lightroom so that I could get the control and the watermark was from PSE as well with sharpenign applied once the image was resized so the original edit was safe.

    Now to pirnt it.

Great shot, look terrific in B&W. The second rendition of the barn with the snow of the third. Print and hang.

Roger -- Nice scene you found. The contrast seems to work and there is nothing like a snow shot in black and white to stress simplicity. I really like how the whites are very white and the shadowed area is so dark.

My one complaint is the vegetation hanging down from the roof. While this can be interesting, in this particular photo it seems to get a little in the way and break up the simpleness. My opin, anyway.

    GB,

Thanks for the review, I guess I'm going to have to start carrying a chainsaw with me; The kit bag is pretty full as it is:lol:

I used that tree and the fence to get height over a fence to take the pic; I guess you can't have everything.
