Hawk moth caterpillar, not your ordinary bug !
Used to go out and hunt them as a kid, cage them, feed them, photograph them, and the pupa, and the moth that hatched.
Now, work gets int he way
I understand why you shot it from the side but it looks a little static. A head-on shot or from an angle may make it more dramatic. Perhaps you have some of those? I imagine with those false eyes that some very humorous angles are possible.
Anyway, I don't know what gear you have but if possible next time, I would recommend getting physically closer in order to blur out the background along with using a wider f-stop.
