Breaking the Rules aka Does it Sux?

Garry Winogrand and William Eggleston played by their own rules. With that does it work?

Re: Breaking the Rules aka Does it Sux?

Greg, I am not too keen on this image for a variety of reasons. Half the frame is dark and uninteresting, two prominent subjects are oof and distracting, and the angle looking up into the nostrils of the two girls is unflattering...and the other girl seemingly glaring at you is something I can't get past. So, in my opinion, it does not work.

For me, it could be a hair more to the left.
That half face on the left edge I would like to see a bit more.
that would have reduced the huge oof frame on the right, which I think is a bit too dominant.

Could you have used a wider aperture?
I like the patterns in the negative space, but that rectangular thing on the right 1/3 is distracting.
Blurring it, or perhaps burning it to reducing its brightness may help.

I like the different directions of their gaze.
Not one of them is watching the action!
Assuming there is some action off to the right where the grandstand is facing

Thanks Paul I'll see what else I got. I could clone the rectangular object, I think it's and old light.

Beautiful crystal clear black and white. I like the composition of the shot--the corners filled as they are. The girl glaring really does call attention to the unwanted attention she got. I do think it's an interesting shot though.

Re: Breaking the Rules aka Does it Sux?

I am struck by the idea that we are presented with a group of young women attending an event in which they have little interest and that is reflected in their facial expression. Possibly there only to satisfy/support husband, Dad or Boyfriend. The pouting is real and interesting and the drab corrugated roofing lends atmosphere to this mood in my opinion. Pity about the oof but the framing of the other components probably makes it unavoidable??.
Would have liked to see the girl holding the can included in the frame.
    I like it.

Personally, I would crop down to the 2 center girls. They have a good story going on.

Here is an alternate take with some cloning.

Re: Breaking the Rules aka Does it Sux?

I do find the cropped version compelling. It makes me want to know what they are intently looking at. The balance of the image is comfortable and focus is sharp where it needs to be. Nice job with the edit!

To me the crop is interesting from a humane angle, they're not posing, just acting normal and watching the race as regular people do. So from a people shot perspective, I think it works!

Re: Breaking the Rules aka Does it Sux?

For me its the person on the right who is in the shot but not that kind of kills it for me. My eyes are drawn to the pattern of the shirt. The shot whould have been better with the frame moved to the left more. The light on the roof don't bother me at all.
