Boats at Night

Took these this evening. I also tried shooting multiple shots and making a few HDRs using PS CS 2's HDR function, but they turned out terrible. I think the boats were rocking too much and I got too much motion between the images. I need to try some other software besides PS though.

I think all three are well exposed.
My problem with the first two and especially the first is they aren't wide enough and parts of the boats are cut off on the left.
I think the third is the best compositionally.
I think your exposure is so good that hdr isn't necessary.

Isn't night photography fun? It is my favorite. Nice work from the Embarcadaro. I prefer the perspective of shots two and three also. Colors are very nice. I am hoping the forecast of rain holds off until Sunday as I want to shoot the Hotel Del tomorrow night.

GB I like the last one best but feel you could have panned slightly more to the right while keeping the small structure on the dock in the shot while getting all of the work "Berkely" into the frame. Using the dock to lead into the shot is a good idea.

GB1, for me it's #3, I guess some of the angles for you were tough. Too bad that water wasn't a little more still. The exposure must have been a bit tricky on the first one, but you nailed it. I'd have liked to see more of the front of the little boat and more light reflection in the water to round off the shape. PS: For the HDR I think Frog recommended one in the recent First try with HDR on the sunflower which I guess you've seen. Cheers, S.

Thanks fellows. I was trying to get a little Christmas light in there, with some success.. There were more lights the previous evening when I drove by but somehow one string of lights disappeared the next evening

Frog, yep, it's one of the wide angle issues with digital lens factors. My film camera got it all in (used multiple cameras that evening) but I haven't turned in the film yet. You may be right on the HDR issue.

CF, thanks. I also am a sucker for night shots, though I haven't been doing them very often lately. I hope you get some great shots at the Parade of Lights. I am not going because I can never get a decent position.. Hope the rain spares you though.

Greg, I doublechecked the original image to make sure I didn't crop off the right side and unfortunately I didn't - what you see here is it. I am considering - not seriously yet - the D700 which is full frame. Then my wide angle lenses will be wide angle again Till then, I will just have to move back more!

SM, I also like # 3 because it has more potential for interesting things happening - really would have liked some 'ghost' people in that sidewalk area. Unfortunately, I group of people walked past (away from me) about a minute or two before I took this and before I thought of it: I then waited for a few minutes and luck being what it is, no other groups came by. I guess I should have waited for a few minutes more. I have yet to create a successful HDR btw - every one I've done so far has stunk. Maybe that's a new year's resolution.. stop sucking on HDRs.

Thks. Now if I can think of a good photo new year's rez -- suggestions? You're right though, it better be challenging.
