    Boats Afloat

San Diego near the airport. A spot I keep reshooting over and over.

I like the first one. It looks as though it needs sharpened. Maybe soft? If it would stand an enlargement you could hang this one in my livingroom.

Greg - Actually, it's already been sharpened All of these night shots were somewhat soft and that is a shame.. not sure why since I use a good tripod.

Anbesol - Well, there really aren't storms in tranquil ol' San Diego, at least not very often. But when the once a year storm or so comes by, I will think of your suggestion and try it.

I looked at this one last night and was trying to decide and then you had to go and confuse me by adding more.
The first is still the best. I really like the soft light and the overall softness.
This is just a guess but since you probably had a pretty slow shutter speed, the pier and boats were probably moving with the water, thus causing the what appears to be softness but may be motion blur. Does look pretty darn calm tho so not sure.
    Keep Shooting!

Hmmm. Good idea about the softness. I'm not sure either though. The boats were definitely moving slightly, and the pier was probably shaking a little. But that doesn't explain the first one's distant buildings being soft also, unless I didn't set the hyper focal distance up right (but I think I did). Note that I shot that one from land (the other two I took while standing on the pier).

I'm actually glad that this roll came out at all. Shot this on a Nikon FE backup camera, and I often load it with film and keep it in the back of my SUV for 'emergencies', like incredible sunsets. But that film was in there for at least 8 or 9 months.. I thought that the heat might have fried it. :blush2:

Very nice shot Greg! I like the first, it has a scale model look to me. I'd like to see a quicker speed too, darken the sky and get the distant buildings and lights to stand out some against it.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!
    Thx, Rod

I like that first vertical composition alot. Looks good and with the softness. If the pier was moving ever so slightly and you were on the pier with tripod, then . . . .I wonder what it would look like with the g boats in focus and the distant city skyline blurred more, but this works for me.
    nice stuff

The first one is great, but something draws me to the second one, I really like that one! Another framer (I need more walls)

Thks Rod, I'll give that darkened sky idea a try. And yeah that's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw these - look like toys (but it's all animation now).

Well actually, I think I did shoot with a wide enough DOF to get them in focus, but they just bobbed around the entire exp But I guess if I focused on them and used a narrow DOF then I could reduce the SS speed. Don't know though.. my experience has been that it looks better when interesting stuff in the distance is sharp, but it is definitely worth an experiment. Thks Gary.

Thanks too, Lori and John. I have a similar shot like this that I think is technically better (check out http://www.gregbulla.com/Photography...ine1_px800.jpg) and I have a framed version of it displaying on a wall at work. But even then, most of the comments are that they wish the boats were sharp too. I am starting to suspect that this might be a requirement to get a hardcore keeper image?

    Re: Boats Afloat

Hi I really like the first shot the color is great.I do like the third one best of all . The nice city scape with so much time but in to the buildings and architecture and then in the foreground all the boats just look thrown in in a rush and cluttered the contrast is striking good work.
