    Black & White HOLGA vote

Hi, I am entering a black and white Holga competition next week, I have to chose one image from one role of black and white film, which incidently, is also my first black and white Holga attempt. The results are not spectactular by any means but your vote will help me proceed with my submission so I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to vote on the four images attached below!

    Many thanks

Herriot, I just voted for your "reflective couple" but I'd say that any of these, other than "orchid sales", would do well. I am not found of the composition behind the "orchid", it looks overly tilted, the tree branch showing in the upper left corner is distracting to me etc.

Every others picture have a sence of movement to them (which I like) and they all seem well composed in their own way. I really like the light patches and the tunnel effect of "sitting on the ground" for instance. On the other hand, I felt that this one might lack some balance but I still think that this is an effective photograph.

"Walking figures" also works very well for me. Your figures somewhat looks like plastic mannequins by the way the light hit them yet they are too dynamic to be. That's a very eye catching effect.

Re: Black & White HOLGA vote

Very interesting images here. I voted for "reflective couple", as I felt it had more to offer in terms of visual dynamic, composition, story, and overall image quality. I also like walking couple very much, but i think that shot could benefit from a crop from the top to eliminate the upper light source.

From what I see from the poll results so far it looks like "Reflective couple" is the hands down choice. Whatever you choose, your images are strong and you stand a very good chance in the contest. I wish you the best. Keep us informed

    Herriot,

I just voted for Walking Figures, but I really like Sitting on the Ground too. I like the darkness and abstract shapes. It makes me very interested in who they are and where they're going. The blur adds to that, plus it looks like one person is carrying a brief case. I get an FBI, top secret, spies-working-behind-the-scenes, kind of feeling from it....if that makes sense. I like them all, though. Good luck with the competetion!

I like the first shot with the walking figures. I would crop the top of the image off and just have the white area being shown. Dont know what Holga means ?

    Hi Herriot,

To me, your second and third pics (orchid and couple) simply look like mistakes, and the movement in them appears to be camera movement (everything is unsharp). It would be hard to spin either as a really good shot, even for a Holga...

The first and third, however (figures, sitting) both have a much more dynamic tonality and composition to them, and the movement in the frame is a subject movement (more of a selective blur).

Both of them show the flaws of the Holga camera, yet both are extremely interesting visually.

By the way, I voted for the first, but it really is a toss-up. The lighting is much more exciting in the sitting shot, but the figure movement is much more interesting in the walking pic...

Re: Black & White HOLGA vote

I voted for the reflective couple as it is the strongest photo in how it matches the title and with its content. The windows and the couple are well framed and complement one another with the plant and reflections adding "interest" and texture to the image. The elevator doors make it pleasingly asymmetric as well.

On the other hand, I could really like the orchid sale if there was more contrast. It seems like a good Holga image, but this one just didn't work somehow.

    Best wishes in the contest.

This one was really really tough to chose from lol. I went back and forth lots of times. I was torn between 1 & 3. I voted for the first one as it had a bit more mystery to it. Good luck.

    Hi Herriot,
I like photos 1 and 4 because I like the atmosphere depicted. Seems your Holga is a very good investment.

Re: Black & White HOLGA vote

    It's a tough choice....
But I voted the "Reflective Couople"
These are all good photographs, but I this one is more visually interesting to me.
I like the angle you shot it in, it is kind of vouyeristic.
So what is the show anyway?
is it something in Signapore or something?

I REALLY REALLY like the walking couple picture, the way their bodies only partly show in the shot, the way the tiles on the floor appear from white and fade into the black, their soft shadows reflecting on the ground, the strong vertical lines from the column. Yum. I agree, if you're allowed to crop it, I would crop the top.

In comparison, the "Reflective Couple"?? Meh.

Littel late, but I like #1 best. Incidentally, I find that when people post their pics, they almost always put the best one first.
