    Black Mountains (Wales)

I was back visting the folks in Wales at the weekend and we had snow falling in some bizzare weather. We had sun, cloud, wind, hail, snow, rain all on the same day.

Here is a photo from Ty Croes just after leaving my sisters house on my way home.

I like it. I do find the white thing in the center a little distracting, but that's a great shot.

    Greg,

The white thing at A4 print size is a feed bucket for the horses out of picture, they are hiding from the freezing wind behind the hedge.

I almost cloned it out but wanted peoples' reaction to it before going that extra step.

I now add the new version for you critique.

Great sky, I think it would be nice if you included a bit more sky if you could have done it without reducing the foreground or getting the horizon centered in the frame (yes, really hard to do but I can dream can't I?).

The whole image just seems a little dark on my monitor. As for the trough in the center I think you should just tone it down a tad rather than remove it-that field is pretty empty without it.
    No, I DON'T need that.

I think you could be right on tone down rather than eliminate - will see what it looks like tonight. I think I prefer it with the bucket, but attracts too much attention.

CanonFan - thanks for looking. glad you like it.

Rylan, - nod HDR on this one, didn't take multiple exposures, it was to darn cold standing in a F8 wind and 4 degrees C without windchill. I took three shots from different positions and then dived back into the car to drive 170 miles home.

I wish I hadn't tried this because now I can't make my mind up which I prefer.

I posted it because of uncertinty about the bucket, but now totally undecided.

    Agree!

Right now the brightest part of this photo is the piece of rock - or whatever it is - near the bottom left hand corner of the photo. Personally I think the brightest spot should be some of the clouds in the sky. I can see there was good sunshine when you shot it. On my monitor, that impression of light is just not there. Unless, of course, it is your artistic decision not to. Otherwise, a small adjustment to Levels in photoshop can fix it in no time.

    Re: Black Mountains (Wales)

AE your comments along with the others worried me, so I just checked my monitors calibration using the Eye One and it states its calibrated accurately.

Then I re-checked the pic and it looks and prints great. So I checked the JPG and yep for some reason its a darker, all that happened was a change to 8 bit, touch of sharpening, and resized for the web and the levels gets changed. Strange the same action has been fine for previous posts.

Here is a modified and checked version of the JPG.

Don't let the sunshine fool you there was a small patch and it was begining to spit with rain where I'm standing. There was that blue hole which quickly filled in.

Rylan - Just got a mag with how to do HDR. I might give this a go from the RAW image. Next time I'm there I'll do the HDR properly assuming the weather is good enough

    Ae, Len,

Thanks, I keep forgetting to check the JPG's before posting expeciting the Actions in PS to get it right each time.

The print's are looking good and better than the on-screen version with no adjustments to the bucket in the field.

I might just hang this one.
