    Birds on a wire

While waiting for the sun to set, I was attracted by the light reflected off the telephone pole. The birds on the wire just added to the scene. However this seems a tad noisy, and I think it's because I didn't apply any NR in Nikon Capture. Your thoughts?

    John,
This is really beautiful!! I love the colors of the sky in the background and the sunset off the pole. Really well done. Nicely seen and composed. I have one question. On my monitor the wires all appear very jagged. Is that a function of the compression to make the file small enough to show here or is it like that in the original as well?

That happens to my photos also. It may be the JPG mode of the Nikon. I gess I will have to run some tests, because you only see it after you resize.

I love the top two thirds of this image. Beautiful colors and lighting. The pinks in the sky are the highpoint for me.

Where it loses me is in the bottom of the frame when I see the sign and the powerlines in the background. That red square in the bottom left is a little distracting too. I would play with smoothing the image out digitally, and maybe doing some cloning or cropping work. But overall, beautiful capture

CL, this image is cropped, so I think if you add the compression to reduce the size for the post, that is why. I could try again at a different file size.

I love the colors of this image but I think the birds are compromised in this shot by all the "stuff" at the bottom of the picture......I like it cropped just above the street sign.......the pole grounds the picture but then the birds become the subject again without having to fight for the position.
    Beautful shot though.

    John,

Those jagged lines from jpeg are mysterious...they happen quite a bit in solid line pictures and I haven't seen a clear description why they do that. The noise is a little much, though it also looks like it's been post processed quite a bit...almost too surrealistic. Good shot though I've seen better from you,

I was trying to bring out the pinks in the clouds, and it got away from me. I'm going to go back to that one and see if I can do it all over again.

    Re: Birds on a wire

The effect of straight lines showing up as jagged is a result of the compression routine (as far as I have been told). What happens is there is too little information in the drastic change between the areas around the edge of the line for the algorithm to figure out what it should substitute for the missing information. Basically compression is a result of taking information away and replacing it with something that still looks like the original but uses less space. Another anology is there is too much difference in information in such a small area for the algorithm to decide how the image should look there.

There, I've said the same thing 3 different ways, hope one of them makes sense to somebody.

To get around this, edit (especially resizing) only in lossless formats (TIFF RAW BMP) then do a save as or export to compressed format (JPG GIF) and then do not ever edit the compressed image. 1st generation JPGs look decent even at 72 dpi on a computer monitor, but everytime U re-edit a compressed image U lose information again resulting in a poorer looking image. Keep the original image straight from the camera in lossless format, do all your editing in lossless format, then save as or export the compressed image lastly.

Again, that's how it was explained to me. I believe the technical term is called artification. The jagged line are artifacts created during the compression process.
