    Birder Self Portrait

Going for a little humor - does it come through? Could it be better? Other comments/criticisms? TIA – Terry

Err, kinda? I get it...if it is dry photog humor. I think an intense pose would have made it stand out a bit more. I can't help but think this would be a daq kind of shot.

I think its funny. The intrepid, bedraggled photographer waiting all night for the bird, the bird appears but the photographer isn't looking and doesn't even have his hands on the camera.
And it is a unique perspective of bird photography as well. I don't recall anything even close to this.

Yeah that fabric just cries out for painting with light.

    Very nice shot.

I didn't even consider that. That kicks up the funny, but the suggested sleeping must be a bit too subtle for me.

Yep. Looks mostly like sleep to me. Hard to do standing up, but for a dedicated birder, I can accept that you might doze and not fall down. It is a complicated shot, well executed with a humorous message. I haven't finalized a rating system yet, but this ranks as not bad.

I think it's a fun shot Terry, but I don't see "sleep". I see distracted more than anything. I think it has more to do with your mouth. It just doesn't look relaxed to me. It looks more like you are looking down and concentrating on something else and not sleeping. Having been in situations like this many times, I know the feeling all to well...

Yup, to me, this one looks more like a natural sleeping pose. The blind seems a little lighter as well which makes the chickadee stand out more. It seems to get a little bit lost in the camo patter on the first image.

    Which blind are you using?

Thanks. The blind is the AMERISTEP OUTHOUSE 804. - Terry

    Re: Birder Self Portrait

Clicker - I like the second one a lot better, it also does look like sleep to me. your being out of focus places a stronger emphasis on the bird (obviously), which I like. In the first, the bird sort of got lost in the sharp detail of the tent, and was secondary in my viewing. In the second, the bird was the first thing I noticed.

The first one looks also a lot like you used a flash, with the way the light graduates around the edges in particular. And this is a lot less noticable in the second.
