    Bikini and Rocks

Which do you like, the black and white, color, or not your cup of tea?

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

I would have to say the color shot has a slight edge due to the detail in the rock behind the model.

definitely colour for me also. it gives a better separation between model and bg. i'm not a fan of the hair across the lips though, i think that takes away from the shot.

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

I agree with arne_saknussen that the rocks behind the color of the rocks make the picture a better but I like the b&w one a bit more. The color one just drops to second because of the color of her bathing suit. It is just so distracting and bright.

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

B&W for me. Like Marco, I find the color of the suit to be distracting. Especially the hot spots on her breast and waistband, and the blue ends of the strings behind her back. I didn't even notice the stings behind her in the B&W image but once I scrolled down to the color, that is the first thing that caught my eye. I do like the colors and textures in the rocks in the 2nd image but that really isn't the subject of this photo, the model is.

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

I like part on BW and parts in color

her face / hair / background in color, whish she was not half covering her face

the rest of her body in B&W, the rib cage is too noticeable in color

depends on how you process it in B/W... really. Just converting it to monochrome won't cut it.

Hair over the lips is a bit of a flaw. Other than that I can't even remotely criticize.

    Great shot to begin with.

Prefer the idea of b/w over color. But it needs to be processed properly as opposed to merely desaturated.

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

    Thanks guys.

Actually, I did play with the grayscale but I found that the normal 'desaturate' command got it pretty much right on. I did adjust the contrast up a little, though.

    So we have

    Color votes: 2
    B&W votes: 4
    Don't know: 3

I personally lean towards the black and white simply because B&W has such a mesmerizing effect with people. And as Macro and Mike noted, the colors of her bikini seem to dominate the scene... good sometimes, but the emphasis should be on her.

Hmm. To me the hair blowing adds energy, but I do suppose that if it were not crossing the lips that it would be a better capture. At least the eyes are clear.

If someone wants to take a crack at desaturating the image and reposting it here, I'm OK with it. I ran it through Topaz and things we a bit extreme looking,

I would go monochrome with a slight gold tone into it.
...send me the high res pic and I'll give it a wurl.

    Phil - I like it!

It does look like some of the experiments I did last night, with Topaz, ... This one here with the intense contrast sort of looks 1950s/60s -ish to me, apocalyptic. I've seen a movie poster like it but not sure where.

I think this model has the kind of looks and modeling pizazz where her photos can be a lot of things .................

I like how it gave depth and detail on the background and the model too... see how here skin shines ...it just makes dimensional and not flat and boring.

    thanks.. glad you like it.

I like phils edit for the background, but I think it makes such a pretty girl look too rugged and harsh, especially in the face as arne pointed out.

Well it's hard to go wrong. I think i like the color. It does make a nice B&W to me but the color just has a bit more as it's not as textured as I would like for it to be mono.

    Re: Bikini and Rocks

I would've desaturated it using the channel mixer. here's the result:

    settings:

then it might be a tad too grey so i do a quick auto levels and then fade that by 50%

i think the channel mixer is the best way to desaturate b&w because you can choose a colour that you want to be the main 'grey' in the scene.

i usually start by trying red @ 100% and the rest at 0%, then switch to green @ 100% and the rest at 0%, then blue. once u find which colour is best to be the main grey, then u can tweek, in this case it was the blue channel for this image and my take on it.

Best edit yet (though I like aspects of Phil's, too).
