Biking silhouette pics...

Took these when my friend was testing out his new bike... it was getting too dark to take normal shots, so I tried this. If they look a bit too dark, that's my fault. How do you like them?

They are Great!!! The second one is just perfect.
How did you shoot? Can you give some details?

This said, maybe the first one is cropped a little too close, and the second one not enough.

Impressed, as usual. I'm undecided whether or not I like the tree closest to front tyre, but other than that, those are excellent shots.

I do think it would be better without the left tree but that's what's there.
I'm partial to silhouette shots so I think these are great.

Did you consider flash?

Silhouettes are critiqued on the basis of the need for maximum detail while maintaining the look of a silhouette. You have pretty good detail in the bike, particularly the first one, but because of his position there is little detail at all in the rider.

Dave - I think they're both good captures but with a bit of a flaw. To me, the tree in front (just to the right) of the bicyclist is a major flaw in that it cramps him up. It's a shame too cause they're nearly perfect w/o it.

I would suggest some PS work but I think that it would be hard to get right cause the sky has some scattered clouds. But who knows? I know I couldnt do it but someone else might be able to

I like both of them, but do agree with GB about the trees, I'm sure it can be done pretty easily with PS, I could take a try at it if you don't mind. I think I could probably do it, maybe not as well as others here with more experince though.
I like the way that silhouette shots look, and I'm partial to bikes being a rider myself, makes me miss riding mine now, (btw what is his new ride? looks like fun.)

I dont know anything about silhouettes except that I wanted to try it for once. I just used a fast enough shutter speed to make the subject dark, and have the nce dark blue sky as well. I will admit that the tree was really bothering me too, but not much I could do about it. That's why I decided to do the second shot, so you can actually see the tree, making it less of a distraction to me.

I didnt use flash because I wanted a silhouette, I tried it but it didnt look as good.

The bike is a 2007 Specialized P3, singlespeed.

By the way, none of these have been cropped, it is just how much I was zoomed in for each.
