    Bike

Eastern Oregon sunrise (summer 2004) 1 hour climb on my bike for a 20 minute DH....perfect. Well, how is the shot (other than the front wheel getting chopped)? The ride was t!ts! Thanks.

    Re: Bike

Welcome, Mr Anderson........(In my best Mr Smith voice... ;) )
It's kind of hard to get a sense of what is going on here.
All I there is a bike, (An SS albeit!), but I think you need more here, than just the bike.
Like maybe some of the great scenery or maybe other riders. Something to keep a non biking audience interested.
The cut off wheel is not good too. Why did you do that anyway?
    Keep shooting! And keep riding!
I look forward to seeing more bike stuff from you.

    Re: Bike

I'm with brian. Not being a huge mountain biker, I don't really gain anything from this. I like the concept, but maybe a silhouetted bike with some scenary would fix it up for me.

    Welcome to the boards,

    Re: Bike

But the title says "bike". It is what it is.

Agreed, chopping the wheel is not good, it was an accident. I rushed the photo, as opposed to letting it come together. Perhaps if the shot had been taken earlier (the sune would have been behind the ridge further), this would have yielded more silhouetting. Plus if there were more overhanging trees that would have been interesting.

Thanks for the pointers and welcoming me here. I am a big newby.

    Re: Bike

The trick to making people think you are a great photographer is to take lots of photos and edit out all but the best. When I first saw this photo I really didn't think much of it and didn't know what to say to you about it-it is just too plain and like everyone else mentioned the cropping of the front wheel feels wrong.

Not with your replied I understand a bit more about what you are trying to do.

The best thing about this photo is that you were thinking about what you wanted to show and you tried to do it. Keep thinking and keep shooting and things will turn out fine.

With out a doubt. I am getting the mindset that when you take 100 hundred photos, then one might be good to put up for critique. Here, I think I took two photos of the bike with the back lighting. I was being too cavalier. Had the right ingredients for what I wanted, the cake did not turn out 100%.

    Thanks for the input.

    Re: Bike

Hmmmmm - rigid singlespeed and the old bike on the roof rack photo. Sometimes we have a of feeling invested in something personal but it doesn't come through in a photo. I think that's the case here. We have to learn to see things as they actually are instead of through the filter of our emotions. The trick is to set up a photo so that it shows things as they are and it conveys our experience of a place, thing or event. Unfortunately, this photo doesn't really have anything to make it stand out. The light is fairly mundane, a bike on a roofrack isn't really very exciting (except to the rider), and the composition isn't very compelling.

Next time, try to take a picture that tells the viewer more about the place and ride. Start from the assumption that the viewer knows nothing. That's always best. Try to make a photo that tells everything. That's not really possible. But setting the bar high is the best way to ensure you create the richest possible photo.

    Hope that helps.
