You could crop it from the left so the sail boat is no longer centered! Don't know if you wanted the sail boat to be in that position or if you had any control of the position, but i feel if it were a bit earlier, before the sail boat reached its position it would have helped a bit more!

I'll agree with Marcus and say that the smaller ship should be more to the left of your photo. My only other gripe is that the background looks very hazy. You could fix that very easily with a photo editing program. If I don't really feel like putting a lot of time into editig I just do an 'auto contrast' and that usually fixes it. I no that's not the best way, but I don't alwasy enjoy sitting at the computer correcting stuff that I could have fixed through the lens. And I'm not smart enough to tell you a better exposure.

All in all it's a cool photo. I'm not near a large body of water so sights like that I don't get to see everyday. I appreciate you sharing!

Thanks very much for the comments. I learn something everytime I receive comments. I struggle with PS so did not know there was an Auto Contrast. Devin, if this is not a PS feature, which program do you use; I would like to give it a try.

As for the framing, my intention was to use the aircraft carriers in the background as part of the varying scale of ships. From the winged bow of the flight deck of the USS Midway to the varied ships on the bay, all about scale or so I was trying to show. As for the position of the three masted ship, I took four different shots of that ship as it approached the position shown on the posted shot. Any farther to the left and it interfers with the aircraft carrier but also that gap between sail boat and bow of the Midway looks awkward. I will try cropping on the left and see how that turns out. But, I understand your points and appreciate the input.

Again, I am most interested in the Auto Contrast feature if you can provide more on that.

Coastal Flyer, I just wanted to say, LOVE the picture, and I actually like the sail boat where it is.

I use Photoshop CS2, but I also LOVE Corel Paint Shop Pro X. I use it for alot of stuff. I think it has a better softening technique then photoshop. Also, it is ALOT cheaper!! LOL

If you have PS you can do "Image - Adjustments - Auto Contrast". You can also undo it and try Auto Color or Auto Levels if that one dosen't work. Glad I could be of help!

Hi CF,

I really like the backlighting on the sails of the Tall Ship, and I think the deck does a good job as a frame for the harbor as well as a block for that bright sunlight. While the background is hazy and busy this is the air quality and traffic I would expect to see in such a place so I think it appears accurate and interesting. Thanks for posting!

CF, I love this shot, being an old salt myself, but the nitpick I have are the jaggies. I have much the same problem with mine, so I've started using Irfanvue to smooth them out.

CF, i love the framing, i just felt the sail boat would have been better not "touching" the carrier.

In any case, regarding PS, they make many things comlicated, specially if you don't know where to look for them. I am a graphic designer and so photoshop has become like a second language to me, but when i got my new digital cam, i got Photoshop Elements with it! I can tell you this for sure, it is a great software if you are not much into extensive software that give you full control, PS Elements really offers a lot, it joins a lot of feature under one command which makes it easier.

Unless absolutely necessary, i no longer use PS for editing images, i leave it for more design related issues.

Give it a shot, you might like it!
