    The Big Chiefs

I've been pining for my favorite place lately and this picture always eases my pain at not being able to return there again maybe for several years. Taken in 1999 at Jazz Fest in New Orleans with my old trusty Pentax K1000 and a Tamaron lens. I apologize for the border and logoing on the image but I had to steal it off of my own website because the file on my hard drive became corrupted and finding the print or (HORRORS!) the negative to rescan will take WAY TOO LONG!!!

With all that said, please bash away -

    Hi CL,
I keep thinking the shot should be great but I do not feel it. I guess the blurry factor does not give the shot justice. Thanks for sharing.

Personally, I love this shot. It epitomizes New Orleans as so many of us view it: A lively, colorful place filled with people of intense interest and music galore. The painting behind the men just gives it that much more New Orleans punch. It's not super sharp but given that it's being copied off your site, I would expect it not to be.

This could be a good shot, but the lack of sharpness is definitely a setback. I have the feeling that the background is sharper than the foreground! Would it be possible that your shutter speed was too slow to freeze the movement of the dancers?

Otherwise, I REALLY like the colors. You may want to try burning the corner edges in PS slightly to bring the viewer attention more towards the center of the shot. I also commend you on the fact that you did not burn your highlights! It IS well exposed.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

I see this almost being an abstract in the way all the colors are coming together. It is pleasing to the eye in that way. i think the advice about burning in the corners a bit is good and should help bring the attention to the Chiefs. thanks for sharing

Lot of good stuff here - the colors and the textures. I think the big problem is that we can't see their faces clearly. If you had that, the overall blur woudn't matter that much.

I like everything about this picture except the fact that it's not too sharp / clear. The focus seems off to me and I find it distracting, but otherwise it's not bad.

    Re: The Big Chiefs

Thanks for the response folks! As I might have mentioned this photo has more sentiment than technical merit but I never have attempted to fiddle with it in PS. As the recent holiday season here has claimed my brain entirely I still haven't gone searching for my negative of this image but after reading these comments I have become inspired to do and see what I can tweak to make this better. I did a few minor adjustments with my "stolen" image file but being that it is low res and a bad scan of a dirty print I have even more incentive to dig out that box and do the right thing with this negative. Thanks everyone!
