    Beowulf & Grendel

    Hi all

I am currently reading Seamus Heaney's masterful translation of Beowulf (no, I am NOT showing off - I read cr*p novels too!)

Somewhat inspired by the story, I created this for your delectation.

    Cheers

    Re: Beowulf & Grendel

Mike I am not familiar with the story but that is some nice editing. I see nothing wrong with it at all nice work. Did it take a long time to put this together"?

    Re: Beowulf & Grendel

For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the story (although there have been a couple of recent film versions), Beowulf is a masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon poetry. Written roughly a thousand years ago, it tells the story of how a hero named Beowulf comes to the aid of the King of the Danes whose hall is being tormented by a monster (probably a troll) called Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands. The story goes on, but that is enough to appreciate the picture.

The statue in the picture is from outside Southwark Cathedral on the south bank of the River Thames in London. The background is layered from a wall I photographed in Troy and part of decorative wall I photographed in Russia, The roof angle (to suggest the Hall of the Danes) was also taken in Russia - I added two layers of Icelandic runes to suggest the original Scandanavian story (the one on the right spells Beowulf - the one on the left spells Mike Dales ARPS!). The trees were taken last winter from my bedroom window. The troll outline and fire were created from other images I had on file and the whole was overlaid with a texture from a wall I took in Italy. All that adds up to ten layers.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

Mike I don't know if this sort of composite image will appeal to every body but it does to me, the fact that you have used your own images and not made it up with stuff plucked off the net makes it completely your own work and enhances the image in my opinion. Hopefully the story is available as an Ebook.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

I have no issues with you editing my photos

A very attractive looking bit of work. You and PS work well together. The building bricks provided you with a truly international construction.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
