    Beginner Photgrapher - First Post

Please give me all of your thoughts, and observations.

These are not the highest resolution.

I'm a beginner photographer experimenting with lighting, and different editing techniques in photoshop cs3, and paint shop pro.

I'd like critiques from both sides of the camera. A photographer's point of view, and what you would like to see if the picture was of you (or your child) and you'd paid to have these taken. My ultimate goal is to improve my technique and style, and be the best that I can be.

    Your help is appreciated!

It looks like a typical cutsie shot. There's no interaction with the model,(you), and the environment.

Yes, what Frog said. I can't find anything I like about this one.

It is a typical cute photo, which I like. But I don't think it's large enough to pass any comment on the photo. There isn't too much detail there. Perhaps 800 pixels on the longest side?

From a "modeling" perspective, most pros avoid this pose like the plague due to the fact that it shows the widest possible cross section of the model's body. Have her rotate her hips 45 degrees to the camera and she will appear about 5lbs lighter with more curves and slimmer hips (yeah, that sounds like a contradiction, but it's not). Leg positioning is very good here but the arms are entirely too straight. Agian, your lighting is near perfect, shadows in the right places and position, with just enough fill light for a good balance. I think I would also crop out nearly all of the background on the left side of the photo as you have more background than subject, and it just doesn't add anything. There is also something odd just above the belt and just left of the belt buckle. If it's a scar, clone it out. If it's a piece of material, tuck it in or cut it off. Just too small a photo to distinguish what's there. I'd also boost the red channel just a bit as skin tone seems to be leaning toward yellow in this shot.

Thank you for all of the comments. I very much appreciate them! F.Y.I. I am by no means a professional model, and in practicing the light I took these pictures of myself with a remote. The model and photographer are the same so it was difficult to create that interaction. =)

I'm attaching a larger copy of this one to see if that helps. (The black dot is a freckle.)

Well, now, that puts a whole 'nother light on it.

If I tried to shoot myself ...

    I just might ...
