    Beach storm

This was from a trip to Lake Erie (Presque Isle) with my family a little while ago. Nothing was really done to it except a little color enhancement. any comments would be appreciated!

    Re: Beach storm

Hey Echo - Storm??? Looks calm to me here... but I guess there is a little discoloration in the sky there. Looks very peaceful actually. A smooth shot, regardless.

Now get over to the Atlantic shore and take some shots in a real storm! - lightning, rain, winds, trees blowing over, etc. Sounds fun eh??

I was just gonna say where's the storm? LOL.
I think the image needs a little rotation but then I am sure you already know that.
I love the silhouette of the tree, however, I think I would have liked to see a little more of it.

    Re: Beach storm

thanks for the comments GB and Allison! actually, it was just the beginning of the storm. at the moment I took the picture, it was raining, but not too badly, about 10 minutes later, the big storm came in with tons of lighting, thunder, etc and huge waves. but the lifeguard kicked us off the beach before unfortunately. I actually sneaked back for this one shot lol.

GB-now that's something I'd love to do! i always wanted to do a lightning shot, but i can never seem to pull it off. lightning is just too darn quick lol

Allison-yep, i noticed the rotation problem right after i posted it. nothing that can't be fixed though lol. thanks for pointing it out!

Lightning that appears and disappears in 1 sec is probably too fast to react to, But here's another approach.

If it's sort of dark outside what you can try is setting your aperature pretty small (say f 11 - f 22) and mounting the camera on a tripod and using the "B" setting. What you do is slide a pick of whatever (cardboard works well) in front of the lens and drop it out of the way of the lens as soon as you see a flash. You success depends on how fast you are and, probably more importantly, if the lightning is the tye that freezes in the sky for 3 or so seconds.

I guess you dont have to do the B setting technique if you have a low shutter-lag camera and can snap the shot quickly and get lucky enough with a freezing lightning bolt. But it's worked for me.

    Re: Beach storm

GB-wow, I will have to give that a try! I didn't know you could do that with the slide. I guess the second problem is waiting for the good lighting now lol. Mostly in PA we have heat lightning in the summertime, which is really quick. I don't think i've ever seen lightning stick around for as long as 3 seconds, but that just might work anyway. thanks for the tip!
