    Barrels & Crates

This is yet another pic taken at Mystic Seaport below deck of the Ship Captain Morgan. I took several shots of these barrels and the best one turned out, not as sharp as I would've liked. I converted it to black and white, hoping to capture a certain mood since it didn't turn out to my expectations. What do you think?

Nina, I really like your choice of subject here, and your capture has a timeless , and mysterious mood about it. It feels as if I could be looking back in time in a sort of dreamy state

Very moody. The softness enhances the dreamy feeling very well. I think the upper left corner a bit distracting. Nice shot!

Nina, my first thought was that this looks like a shot from a Holga. There is a very dreamy, moody feeling coming off of this image. I like it for it's simplicity, and mood, but I do find the bright corner a bit distracting.

I like the moody feel. Was the focusing problem due to low light? I can see where an autofocus system could get confused with this kind of shot. Either manual focus or aperture priority with a smaller aperture may have caught the shot you wanted. As it is you still have a nice image. BW was a good choice.

I really like the subject and the mood that you have brought to the photo by using a very soft focus. I do think a slightly sharper focus would have made for a stronger image, but this really has a dreamy feel that works.
The composition is very nice and I like how the one barrel almost pops out of the picture...this really adds to the dream effect.
I do have to agree with mjs, the upper left corner is a bit distracting from the overall feel.
    Cheers.

The lack of focus is a huge asset here Nina and it gives that "Undisturbed Forever" and timeless feel to it.

    Nina,

I am honnestly not sure about this one. My brain tells me that the crate and the beam at the left of the main barrel should pretty much be in focus as they are almost on the same plane, yet they aren't. You seem to have used some sort of softening filter and I am not found of the effect even if it convey a certain mood. I guess that I would prefer to see a background with a more natural "out of focus" look.

Perhaps I am just missing something as I am the only one for whom the shot doesn't really works but this is my honnest opinion on it.

    regards

You've done well with what you had. The imperfections throughout give it a special feel that might not have been there had the image been more perfectly exposed, sharper, etc. Then, thanks to your composition, my eye falls on the severely limited focused area (front of barrel and some of the ground) to make it work, for me.

I'd like to thank you all for your encouraging words. I was so unsure of this particular picture and had apprehensions about posting it initially. Your comments and positive feedback have helped me realize that although the result of the image was not what I had intended, the shot still conveyed an interest that I never expected.

I definitely like the effect. I too find the upper left light distracting.

I would play around with cropping a bit. You might come up with a nice surprise. ;)
