That's pretty good for a point and hope shot over the crowd.
You seem to have the usual problem of movement, I can see the lights over the stage look sharp judging by the reflection on the bar just in front of the stage in the centre.
Maybe the camera has focussed just in front of the stage instead of on the band, or perhaps it's an artefact from resizing to 640x480, but the mic stands don't look sharp.
Despite the number of lights, the exposure looks long. I've always been amazed at how slow the shutter speed is when I try to work with stage lighting.

I'd crop it a little, or a lot, because I find all the extra lights overhead distracting.
    Which version do you prefer?

    First crop

Is best but i like the original simply because it captures the feel of a huge hall or theatre. Thanks for your comment and time.

I'd say given the circumstances, you were indeed happy. It's a great mood shot of your son's band... though I have to wonder... doesn't a father get the best seats in the house? *smiles*

Ah well they don't get rich by giving things away do they, these club owners?
I agree with your idea of the uncropped image, it all depends what you're trying to show.
I was thinking of it as a photo of the band, rather than the venue as well.
When they play somewher bigger (maybe a stadium) then the band will be a little dot in a sea of fans

I'm happier with the first crop too, I went too far on the second because the light is then coming from nowhere and it just looks odd.
Hey - no one says I'm right after all. I just have ideas ;)
