    Baby Doll

Hmmm I'm not sure about this one. Going out of my comfort zone where the lighting is concerned but I really wanted to try some dramatic lighting.
Your thoughts, as always, are much appreciated.
    TIA

First of all I really like what (I think) you are trying to do here, the image and crop are great.

As far as the lighting I like it well enough but it seems to me that there is too much grey and not enough strong white. I think some bright white highlights (perhaps on her profile) would make the black stronger too.

It's actually a little softer than I would have liked but I think that that was due to the 1/15 SS.
I know, I know I can hear you all shouting "TRIPOD!"
    Bah! Humbug! LOL

    Is this version any better?

I'd say that is better (I can only imagine how very much better it would have been if you had used a TRIPOD! (joke, joke, joke)).

Well I like it also, excellent just like the rest of your work that you post. It really helps to have children that are photogenic;-)

Alison - Nice shot. Not sure if I would have left some space above her head. Like you said, a little soft, but that's what happens indoors with no flash.

I think the issue is that just as there weren't any bright whites, there aren't any black blacks except for in the background itself. I think lightening the background, kicking up the contrast slightly and lightening up the photograph as a whole, might correct it. Compositionally, I think this turned out very nicely.

    Well again, very good work....

But regarding your initial post as to dramatic lighting, this is not!

However, i don't see why you would want the dramatic lighting here, since (minus the unavoidable softness ) is a very good, very well executed shot....

Maybe something else would work better with the dramatic!

I have a photo challenge to complete. The criteria is "A dramatic portrait, profile wth face showing, no eye contact, no back shots".

I googled dramatic lighting into images. It came up with a number of versions of dramatic lighting. Looking at these examples I thought I had pulled it off pretty well. I just wished I had managed to do it a little better.

Looking back at things, Dramatic llighting v/s Dramatic portrait....or simply a falre for the dramatic if you will, i think i owe you an apology Alison here, since i took the literal meaning of the word as i know it from theatre...which is not the case...

Although maybe a bit more contrast would have helped....according to my own research of Dramatic portrait, this image does indeed work....

So I'm sorry about but i was indeed mistaken earlier....we live and learn

    nice job!

Alison,,,I have a problem photographing children against black backgrounds...IMHO it adds something sinister to the image...I would have photographed her against a lighter background..

    Sorry

It's ok Marc. Your opinion counts just as much as everyone else's.
I am way out of my comfort zone with this one and want to get it right.
How am I to get it right if you don't give me it as it is.
I just wish you had an image in your gallery to show me an example of what you believe dramatic lighting to be.

I know what you mean Jurgen.

I mean I wasn't getting a very good feeling from this shot. It was actually making me feel a little upset. Like I said, I wished I had made a better job of it.

For me though, I don't think a lighter bg would have worked for the effect I was after.

Danielle was very sweet and sat for me again, and this time, I was much happier with the results

I love the image with eye contact but then that's more me. Unfortunately, I have to use one WITHOUT eye contact

I just thought you might like to see the results from my re-shoot.
