    B&W Landscape

Dose this image work as a B&W? Or is the water and sky too blown out?

Here is the color image for comparison.

The color version is much better. I like the trees. Have you tried PS- selective color on the sky. You can also layer for a more rich color. I hope you don't mind. It was a quicky change...

Thanks Greg. I only have Microsoft Digital Image Suite and the software that came with my camera right now (I should have PS soon), I do not think I can layer with what I have.

edit- I don't mind at all, it's appreciated. I think the sky looks much better, thanks again.

To me, seems like the scene was a little too overcast, which didnt do the colors justice. It's also a little soft - was it a scan?

I tried brightening up Greg's edit and also sharpening - here's the results.

Well, you darkened the foreground too much in the process, taking out necessary detail. Bring back the foreground and then the next step is to work on the sky. The approach is either to use the Nik Efex filter plug-ins or create your own graduated filters in PhotoShop.
Erasing the sky, shooting another one with more blue and clouds, and then combining the two is also a good alternative.

    Ronnoco,

I did darken it to increase saturation a little, but I also upped the contrast pretty significantly.. it was lacking that element. Hitting that sky is outta my league right now -- too hard to mask.

You seem to have been adjusting the whole photo, which means that you are making some parts better, but some parts worse. If you learn how to use the magic wand function or the magnetic select, you can then selectively improve different sections of your photo, without even concerning yourself with masking.

Your work displays great talent and some work with PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro X would take it, that extra step toward absolute top quality. Make the effort to learn these programs.
