The key issue I have with the photo is that there is no good range of tonality from the darkest black to the whitest white. Also, most of the pixels seem to be somewhere in the middle gray range making it all a little bland. I copied / pasted it into my editor and a levels tweak seemed to take care of the aforementioned.
Also, the far end of the bridge seems to be close to the center of the photo ...a little bit of a crop to make it intersect closer to the rule of thirds could help.
And another nitpick - the "new iron fence" on the right seems "not to belong" sort of ...
Othewise, it is a very nice pic of a very long covered bridge - hard to find those these days ... :-)
I agree w/ llewpics, this is begging for a contrast/levels boost. You'll lose some of the detail, but the image will be stronger for it. You might also try duotone/tritone to give it some punch.
The 2nd version is WAY better as you now have whites to blacks and greys between. You might think of cropping a bit from the bottom and the left side, but otherwise looks good!
2nd is way better. what the first was missing was black. a whole lot of black
The 2nd still needs some black outside the bridge also. If you look closely there's hardly any pure black areas outside of the bridge. that makes the rest of the photo look a bit surreal because in real life you have to have blacks and white and grey tones in most photos that have trees, ponds etc.
