    Re: Autumn leaves

Hi Matilda, welcome to the forum. I like your subject and the color of these leaves are wonderful. The difficulty in getting these leaves are all the extraneous other stuff such as the twigs and branches and trees in the bg. You did pretty good considering what you had to deal with. The background is blurred nicely but there is still the distractions of all the branches. Another thing that is taking away from the image a bit is that the leaves are overlapping and not one is truly distinguishable. Two are flat, and two overlapping so it is taking away from appreciating the actual shape of the leaves. Shooting from a different angle might solve that issue as well as avoiding some of the branches and stems. Zooming in to isolate them better and also keeping them out of the center of the frame could help improve upon this too.
Still it is a nice image to view but these are some of the things that I feel could bring this up some more.
    Looking forward to more.

    Hello...welcome to PR.

The composition is very centered and I don't believe it works in this case. Nice DOF but the back is still very busy.

Zoom in or get closer physically.

Maybe exposure could use +1/3 stop but you can adjust it on the computer.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I agree with the comments made by the other members. Something you may want to try is to photograph some of the fallen leaves that still have color. You will be able to eliminate all distractions that way and come in as close as you can.

    Re: Autumn leaves

Hi Matilda - Welcome. I like your photo in general, but there are several ways it could be improved. Not to repeat what the others have noticed, I think the leaf would look better against the brighter area (the sky) than against the dark, wood stuff. Unfortunately, it's always a challenge to get an exposure where everything looks correct when you have a subject against a bright background - something has to look 'right', which means that the other area will look too bright or too dark. So framing the leaf against the sky could make the leaf even darker. What tricky folks do is use a fill flash or some other sort of supplemental lighting (reflector, etc) to illuminate the foreground subject against the bright background. As you can see, you've chosen a harder exercise for your first image on this camera.

    Anyway, welcome to the boards!

Add me to the list that thinks you should get closer to your subject (a lot closer). Doing that will solve a lot of the problems that this image has with a distracting background and the subject taking up too little of the frame.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Re: Autumn leaves

Thanks for great suggestions! I tried cropping it, but that didn't really work because the overall background is then too dark (and I think still distracting?), so I will try out the suggestions next time I go for a walk =)
