    The art building

Comments? I can't figure out the geometry either.

I'd say it's a technically well executed photograph.

    My question as well.
Just enough other elements to stop it being excessively symmetrical, nice shot.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

The colors and exposure are superb.
It seems like the left side of the building is closer to me.
    Nice shot Greg!
    When are we getting together?

    Re: The art building

Thanks fellows. I'm not sure what's up with the geometry(!) If you measure the distance of the left and right top areas of the building to the top of the frame, you will see that they're ~ the same distance. However, the bottom sides of the building are different distances to the bottom of the frame. The only thing I can think of is that this is caused by me not taking it from the 'dead center' point of the building, though I tried.

This would also have been an excellent time to have one of those tilt/view cameras that allows you to modify the angle of the sensor frame in relation to the lens. I could do this in PS too, I believe, but you lose a lot of image area in the process...

Adamo, just shoot me a few days and times that work for you. I have another buddy in Chula Vista who's also interested in scouting a few places; do you know of any special places for Christmas? He recommends shooting from a spot in Pt Loma that presents a nice cityscape angle. Besides, we need to celebrate your birthday

    Re: The art building

I'm at work and dont have access to PS or LR, but if you scroll the picture up and line up the top of the building with the tool bar line (Which should be straight) the right side of the building seems to drop just slightly. However, it seems like the right door is further from me than the left, which might be the issue.

    Re: The art building

I would have liked the top of the building to be in the frame. It feels cramped to me with it cut off like that. Otherwise it seems technically good.

    Re: The art building

Thanks, Adamo and Matt. I'm pretty sure that I didn't quite stand dead center when shot it, or at least didn't aim the camera perfectly straight on, resulting in that slightly uneven look. Ahh..

Matt, I don't even remember what the top of the building looked like. I think I cut it off because I couldn't move backward any more without steppin off the dock into the water

G, I did a very quick distortion fix on this. Let me know what you think

    Re: The art building

Matt, I think the distortion fix improves the shot. Could use a little sharpening. However, there is still something off about it... The right side of the building is just a tad lower than the left. An improvement, but I've found that with geometrics that distortion and tilts are just soooooooooo noticeable. My fault for not getting things right on location. Thks for taking a crack at it.

The distortion correction muted the colors and took away the clarity. I like the original in comparison.

    Re: The art building

GB, this composition looks way too squared to me, the lines and perspective in the composition don't flow very well, and the subject is rather dull. I'd like to be interested, but the subject matter and the geometry are both making this a rather lackluster image for me.

    Greg,

As a lover of tall buildings, I would have loved to see this shot made with a 20mm lens, from a very low position and cropped to a very tight vertical format, of course you can always put on water wings next time, if you run out of dry land. Overall I think the technical aspects are pretty close
