Architectural Study In Blue And White

I've been holding on to this one since the Chicago gathering. It's one of my favorites from that day. I've made no color enhancements at all.

That is a neat pic Kelly! I appreciate the essentially two tone image an the relative isolation of the archetectural highlights - not easy with the big city pictures. my only suggestion would be to use one of the available lens distortion programs to "straighten up" the building. Otherwise, this shot looks much like the "artist's rendition" you get in a sales pitch!

    Happy Shooting!

Kelly, I hope this isn't too unrelated for you....but why have you been "holding on" to this one?

No big reason, really. I prepared several at the time to post, and maybe at the time I felt I was posting too much of the same subject, or just wanted to wait til things calmed down to post it, or something. I don't really remember. But then I got busy and forgot about it. I was just looking through my folders yesterday, and came across it again, and realized I never did post it.

    So now I did.

Well kelly, I give you points on composition, but at least on my screen this is just way bright.

WOW. I love the brightness. What an original vision of this scene. I'm not sure you need the little blue box on the right - it pulls the eye away from the real subjects. Seeing this and Seb's dusktime shot of the same park sure make the gathering worthwhile.

Did you get any others with this kind of exposure?

This is a very nice image Kelly. Makes me wish I would have gone to Chicago with the group.

Wow, very neat! I love this. As John mentioned, you should try to straighten up the buildings a little bit, but the idea of having a monochromatic pic (just shades of blues) by blowing out the highlights is really cool.

You should post this one in the Art section.

We all hope to see more of your work soon! It's good to see you posting again.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

    Kelly,

Great composition and good shot, just a tad bright on my monitor. Mainly the left side of the tall building seems washed out on my monitor and overexposed.

    Regardless, great shot!

I like the composition alot here and i don't feel it even necessary to straighten the building out. really like the small image included in the Bean? I think it is your intention to have this "blown out", but i don't like that aspect of the image. For me, the building is blown out and too bright. The whole image seems washed out to me. If it were a little more contrasty, i would like it even more than I already do.

Well I have to say that I love this shot. The blown out whites don't detract at all for me. The overall lightness and low contrast has given it (on my screen anyhow) a very artistic feel. It looks like a poster, but not a poster of a photograph. I'm not sure how to explain the type of art it appears to be or the media used. Maybe a lithograph. In computer terms I'd say it looks like a vector drawing.
In any case I think you've created a great feel with this image. Hang it on your wall!

Re: Architectural Study In Blue And White

The overall composition is great !

There are a couple of notes, The building on the right is the Standard Oil of Indiana (originally) then the Amoco building and so on.

The west side (left of picture) of the Amoco building is also fluted/columnared as is the front or south face. At first I was sort of put off by the fact is seems washed out. Then it sort grew on me.

The main three elements in this photo are really three separate periods in Chicago architecture and its interesting that these are all either fanatically despised, loved (though not by the same people), or represent (in case of the Millenium Feature in the foreground) something as of yet unresolved for most.

The reflection in the foreground gives me an idea . . . (I'll be shooting close by in a couple of weeks) maybe I can steal an hour . . .

I too would vote for tweaking the perspective, some, though not all keystoning is terrible. After all when you look up, there is a vanishing point. And this is a tall (~1000ft!) building.

    Thanks for sharing this one.

Look forward to shooting buildings with you someday.

Thanks for your replies! I've been away for the weekend and couldn't get online. Unfortunately I have about one minute to reply, so for now I'd just like to say "thanks" for your thoughtful comments. Especially appreciate drg's background on the subject!

I'll get back to this one later.
