I will also add, ironically the first picture (of the fishhouse) was taken with one of the storms in the background which came before Hurricane Charley hit in Florida this summer. That very fishhouse had its whole roof striped off i heard

Hard to really look at this way. If the subjects are the house and tower, they are not large enough in the frame. If the subject is the sky I think it may need to be emphasized more, although as I said, it's hard to look at this way. If the subject is the overall maritime scene, it just doesn't have enough of interest for me, although of course as I said....

Try a curves adjustment something like this if you want a more dramatic sky.

If you've had pictures stolen, that would be an interesting topic on the viewfinder forum. I'd be interested in seeing what kind of shots were stolen, who stole them and what they used them for, how you found out and what they did after you informed them. Sounds interesting.

These shots have appeal to me because, well, I live on the ocean and have taken more shots of the ocean than any one on earth. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration..heh but for those who don't just adore anything beachy you have to give a bit more interest. It's not enough to see sky (unless it's unusually spectacular) or water and a distant thing that we can't see details of. Your composition is good in both and the quality of the photo is good but try taking a photo where the fishhouse or lighthouse is pronounced and the wonderful ocean and sky are a bonus in the background. I'd like to know where this is because I've never seen a fishhouse right on the water like that. W coast of Fla? Please keep posting.

    A watermark? So what...

And this was just a quick 3 min job. Watermarks like these are nothing but a false sense of security. How you can improve? Use larger watermarks; makes cloning more difficult, but it ruins the image. My advice if you're afraid that people will steal your shots; don't post them in the most public place on this planet; the internet ;)

Good point Elysian, I have had photos stolen on ebay of complete set ups. Just lazy people who had the same item for sale, using my pic. It's annoying but the truth is that we basically can't do a thing about it. Someone mentioned the other day that web designers (which I am) might be lurking on here to get photos. Yikes, that bugged me so I started making my posts a bit smaller. What you can do, is go to google and put in something like "ocean", click above that on IMAGE and see if your pic comes up. If it does find out what site it's on and threaten them.

Ok grentz, I decided to upload a smaller version instead (of the image without the watermark), after all I don't want to make it easy for those with the wrong intentions.

If you want to see what's technically possible in just a few minutes, just let me know and I'll mail you the full version. ;)

why in the hell are you posting about a PRIVATE message on a PUBLIC thread? exchange email addresses or something....

the photos are OK, nothing for me to get excited about. if you post them on the internet and someone likes it, they will take it.

mjm -- you have some serious attitude problem. Get over your freakin' self. Don't bother to reply if it's something that ticks you off so much.

todd, this thread was posted by grentz to get feedback on some photos. not for shesells to ask elysian if she has checked a private message. i realize i have derailed this thread now, but it all started with the OT stuff from shesells. bah.

Do you have a problem? Try to find out what's going on before you attack someone. I had no way of telling him that I sent a reply to him about something important. the pm thing was messed up for some reason. I tried to figure out another way but couldnt. Like Todd says, you are doing the same thing in your comment. Take a chill pill, no one was hurt.

Grentz: I'm sorry that all this went on in your thread, it's not typical of members to act this way. Please stick around and you will see that yourself. It's a great and fun forum.

Grentz -- I would definitley like to see a little more color saturation with this. Bluer blues, greener grees, warmer sand. Of course, all of this can be done in Photoshop(PS). Although, it admittedly looks better on one of my dual monitors than the other.

I think both would look great as high contrast B&W.

One last thing, you could always do this to intimidate the casual theft away...

    Hi Grentz,

I agree with Todd that you need to increase the contrast and saturation in your shots. While PS can help you with that (thanks Chunk for your very effective posting!), the best way is still to use a polarizer when taking the shot. I have owned few pola. in the past few years. Nothing so far beats the warming pola. from Singh Ray!

Another good idea while taking the shot would have been to use a split ND to tune down the highlight of the sky/clouds. However, you can get the same result in PS by adding an adjustement layer on the sky and darkening it a little bit.

PS: I do not have high quality split ND filters and they tend to have a very annoying magenta cast. I am drooling over the Galen Rowell ND filters. But at 600$ the complete set... well, it will just have to wait!

    Cheers,

    Steph.

thanks for the help guys, i actually was on vacation while taking these shots, the lighthouse is off a boat at the 100 foot mark right off cudjoe key in the Florida keys

the fishhouse is off on an island by fort myers florida

i think some of my color problems were the camera i was using, i was using my friends cdmavica (i dont know the exact model but an older one) and i was having trouble with color balance. Hopefully very very soon i will get a canon 300D Digital Rebel.

I knew what you guys were saying about the watermarks, i guess it doesent matter too much on these images. I
I also have a dual monitor setup and i use each picture on each monitor (so i have both pictures up at the same time) for my wallpaper, it really looks cool like that in my opinion

i tried to get a close up of the lighthouse with that cd mavica but it had a crap lens and i was too far away to get a good shot.

but hopefully when i get a digital rebel i will have some better shots for you guys to critique

thanks again for all your comments :-)

LOL mjm!! Here's what happened. I thought something was wrong with my pms' because I have my security set high. It honestly was important, so I thought of just starting a new thread and saying "Elysian, did you get a pm from me", but I thought it would be crude to do that. I don't know him personally so I didnt know how to get in touch another way.I noticed that he had just that very minute posted in this thread, so I thought he would notice right away.

Anyway, it worked and everything is fine now but then this other guy came along and blasted me, I forget his name..mj something. Well, then I started crying uncontrolably like this: ~wahhh wahhh wahh~ It was really sad. Then Tod came along and rescued me and gave me strength to tell mjsomething to chill! Elysian supplied the bottle of chill pills. So all is well. The End

No hard feelings at all and I feel very happy now. Also , thank you so much for asking, I'm sure you were just in a bad mood.
    Later, Kit

    Grentz..

You're such a great sport to put up with all this in your thread.
well, now you know a lot of us, so don't be a stranger.
I'm going to try to see that fish house on my little trip. I'm leaving for a few days because I live in fla and we are expected to get the new hurricane. I'd like to go the west coast, but not sure what areas are maybe flooding or messed up from Ivan. Do you happen to know? I won't go south to the Keys because I just don't want to get trapped down there with no way out.
    See you soon,
    Kit
